Can my home security camera be hacked? [NETWORK] feb 6
Who: Tim Drake
Username: timjdrake
Warnings: Gross invasion of privacy, surveillance, hacking, cyberstalking as per Plotty Plot. Allusion to self-harm, auditory hallucinations, filth, as per ARRHYTHMIA.
[Tim figures he'll keep it short. Most good sales pitches are. He's dressed the part of Tech-Exec meets Casual Friday- hair in need of a wash, tired eyes and all. But despite it, his words are crisp and it's clear he's only online for a reason.]
I need someone to look over code. I'll even take several someone's. I'm not looking for a Certificate of Completion from Google-U as your past experience, but you will be well paid for your time, effort, and discretion if you're chosen.
If money's not your thing, let me know what currency is worth your while and we can work something out.
There's a fair chance that I'll ask for your skills in the near future. You'll always be welcome to decline the invitation but, again. Your discretion is and will be invaluable to this process.
Anyone interested should follow up with a direct message, email, whatever-- my name is Tim Drake. You may have known me when I worked in I.T. before.
[As he signs off he mumbles that, "At least starting at the computer is better than cleaning up your room all day."]

I'm interested.

Sweet.
I'll be sending an application shortly. It's more of a quick aptitude test.
[Not so 'quick' of a test that it can upload to the server in a minute. Patience, grasshopper.]
You'll be compensated for your time.

(She can be patient. In fact, everything feels weirdly fast now that she perceives time in a more Human manner -- she used to wait much longer for responses.)
I look forward to working with you.
(Absolute confidence. She has zero doubts she will pass that aptitude test with flying colors. In fact, she's looking forward to the opportunity to show off.)
lmao I have no idea what I'm doing (cw: opioid mention)
Y'know, if it wasn't exactly what he's fishing for.]
The feeling is mutual.
Good luck.
[For both parties: a ping, signaling the successful file transfer.
For Tim: the time to brush up on his notes on CHOSEWELL, and scour the ADIs forums for their public persona.
And Cortana's task is:
• Timed. Because of course it is. Timed exams suck. There's no countdown, but the seconds sure are ticking.
• You find... a disconnect, between what could unify the visual (recorded) feed of what seems to be an aborted forced entry to a... medical wing. One command-to-be is straightforward: remote access another hospital camera to better ID the suspects. Two more rely on sleuthing out connections to a cell tower and its pings with phone models cross referenced to that hospital's shift workers. Shut up it makes sense.
• Put together, through the magic of this writer knowing absolutely fuckall of the wonderful world of cyber forensics, fantasy, and a tremendous amount of knowledge and/or hard work, a spliced-together video and audio will now reveal a woman's voice, hushed and hurriedly, talking her partner Matt out of robbing some... powerful, in-demand pain killers.
• Congrats on helping Gloucester PD get one step closer to figuring out where some costly medicine disappeared to during last month's chaos.]
It's okay, this isn't the worst attempt at cybersecurity technobabble I've encountered
She's pretty prevalent on the network and she's generally helpful though also kind of a little shit (yeah, most of her posting on that one is being done under someone else's account, but it really ought to be obvious that this is her). Honestly, there's a lot of stuff she's posted on there.
As for the test...
Well, she can't operate as quickly as she used to be able to, but today's cybersecurity has about as much power against her as tissue paper. Over five centuries of exploits that hadn't been discovered when this technology was made and an entire suite of scripts and tools she's programmed to help now that she can't connect to things directly make stealing security footage a piece of cake, and it's not hard for her to use the visuals to find out those identies and from there it's not hard to get the rest...
Like a lot of hacking, it takes a bit but she'll get it done and send him the result.)
I'm guessing that this task you want done has something to do with cellphones?
ty now I know I should be doing worse 👀
As in, he's hitting on that point of satisfaction that Cortana doesn't need him at all.]
the rough draft I have now deals with home security systems. I want to polish it up before moving to cellphones and other on the move devices.
Well I should clarify it's an extension of a single security system I want to launch first. Ever hear of ADT?
[Humor him. Also.]
does your rat take treats?

(There are many possible meanings for the acronym, of course, but he was talking about security systems.)
Well, I see someone did their research. (Somewhere, she's grinning.) He's actually one of the office rats. A former coworker kept three as pets and a few of us have continued to care for them -- I originally added mine to the group so I could keep him for monitoring long-term, but I'm pretty sure by this point the chances of anything new happening are low. You can find them in (And she'll name the area the rats are kept in.)

I... really need to thank you for not letting everybody know about that.

[He's largely worried about Tim and what someone disgruntled might do to him if he renegs.]

Wait, who said I didn't have a job?

[It's a tough thing to say, that he's not working. Tim would argue he'd been working his flat little butt off since his return. It's accurate to say he isn't employed, yeah, but Tim sighs and runs a hand through his hair.
Second verse, same as the first.] Besides, it's irrelevant. I've got this under control.

No, I'm not stealing the money. I don't plan on stealing the money.

Pass the test first, talk payroll and sign on bonuses later. Do you have the time now? Assessment is best done in one sitting.

In person?

There's no need for that. If you believe your performance will benefit from one of ADI's computers then you can feel free to check one out. Resourcefulness can only help your score.

I have my own setup. Send it over
