Dear Mr. Calhoun,
A guitar is not an instrument I know, but there seem to be many of those. One of my companions plays the piano and is a most excellent bard, both with this and the written word. Though, I expect she is too modest to say as much.
I fear I cannot recommend music to you. The songs I know are those for tending a grave, working a field, and a night at a tavern.
Regards,
Mercy Graves

[ Oh no he absolutely thinks she's referring to someone from his world. ]

PLEASE teach me
from,
Jeff

I can give you one of our songs, if you would like. I cannot say I am graced with a sparrow's voice, but I know the words well.
O the grass grows high
and the birds do fly
o'er across the morning sky
Our friends below
O we love them so
As we place them row by row by row
As we place them row by row
Tend to the graves
Tend to our friends
Tend and bring them back again
In the flower and seed
In the autumn mead
Sing round, sing round
Give praise to the ground
That feeds us all we need
It has a few more verses after that, mind. My brother and I used to sing that as we were digging graves to give us a rhythm for the spades.
Regards,
Mercy Graves

So, then—]
OK Computer, Radiohead. 1997. Give it a listen if you haven’t already.
no subject
Jeff does a search for OK Computer, getting about halfway through the album before he responds. ]
jesus this is like a fucking revelation compared to their 1st album
i mean Pablo Honey wasnt bad or anything but its kind of conventional you know?
this is on another level
i cant beleive im just 2 yrs out from this album coming out
no subject
But here they are, and here he is, having this discussion regardless. He supposes he can indulge in some sense of normalcy, afforded to him rarely enough.]
There’s a reason some consider it the greatest album ever released. Probably an exaggeration, but there’s no denying that it was a cornerstone in the alt rock genre. Still is.
[Anyway.]
What does this have to do with your work?
no subject
what other big cornerstones did i miss?
[ This is like audio porn for a time displaced bard. TELL HIM EVERYTHING. As for 'work'... ]
im a musician so its kind of proffessional curiousity
and i figure i should try to blend in with people my age here
which i cant do if i dont know what the hell their talking about and only know the same music as their middle aged dads...

Sounds like you found a treasure trove.

i could blow way to much time on this app
i mean it doesnt beat having a real cd or record or anything but its such a cool way to catch up on everything i missed with this time travel bullshit :-)

"Convenience" is pretty much what fueled technology in the future. Everything at the tip of our fingers.
What year do you come from? I'm from 2023.

i mean some of this stuff is cool [ like Spotify, OBVI ] but its a lot to get used to
[ It's not, like, totally foreign tech to him. Sure, cell phones, computers, and the internet are all already a thing when he's from. But not like this, all combined and ubiquitous.
Maybe he shouldn't have teased his little brother so much for being so into the web and all that dorky amateur hacking shit. ]
its 1995 for me. which is weird because so much is the same but its also different in all these ways i never wouldve thought
is it weird for you too? [ Like, sure, she's only got a two-year displacement, but who knows, a lot of insane shit could've happened in those two years. ]
