[network/open] WTF???

Who: Donna Noble
Username: supertemp
Warnings: Discussion of teeth, serial killers

Right.
Donna Noble.
New arrival.
Question:
What the flip is going on with the teeth?
Why are there bags of teeth in the park?
Who does that?
Whose teeth are they?
Isn't that like what a serial killer does?
I saw a program on Ted Bundy once.
Mad stuff.

Well, yes, that's fair. They move around a lot, they thrive on the strange and spectacular, and they use a great deal of diversion and distraction.

There were a few things that we found...unsavory about this one, though. It was connected with a mass casualty train crash about a hundred years ago, and they were using the still-haunted railcar as a ticket booth, just as a starter.

But the main concern was the man who immolated himself in front of a full crowd of people. It was an actual ability, not just illusion. He actually burned himself alive, and then regenerated.

Right now, the circus situation is "still under investigation". We weren't able to act decisively on the matter, so we had to let them move on to their next show.

Which I'm not happy about, but it was not my decision to make.

[He's not even going to pretend to be happy about that.]

Not positive, no. But the Powers seem to be rooted in supernatural presence and lore, rather than scientific, so that's the assumption I'm going with until we find something that leads us to believe otherwise.

Then again, I admit my bias. I'm a mage by trade, and have been for a very long time. That's what my senses are tuned to.

It sounds like you have experience otherwise?

Well. That's definitely a different point of view than I'm used to, I have to admit. I've thought about it a few times since I arrived here, but things seem to line up more with my supernatural experience so that's the frame I'm viewing things with.

I won't completely discount the possibility of things outside my experience, though. Particularly since there's that old saying about suitably advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic. In our world, we've only barely begun exploring the planets closest to us, so any sort of truly distant space travel is still a ways off.

Space wasp vicars, though.

There's rules, even if we can't put them together from where we are. Sometimes the big picture is so big, it's hard to get enough of it to judge. That makes things difficult.

[Jaeger can only rely on that much, really: that he knows what he's doing up until he doesn't. This place has only made that more clear to him, so that makes two of them.]

Have you found yourself a department to work in, yet? From the sound of it, you're doing investigations?

Investigations and Security. It's similar to the work I was doing before, so it was a good fit. If I'm going to be here, at least I can be doing something familiar, that helps. Though they only let us take so many hours in a week.

And no matter what department you're working in, you should be prepared for things to happen. We've had several incidents that affected the entire building. It just seems to be something about the town, and ADI's presence here.

That wouldn't surprise me, especially since we aren't paid very generously to begin with. It's not a living wage. But ostensibly the reason is to keep us workaholics from overstressing ourselves. Never mind that things happen whether we're on or off the clock...

[It's not an ideal situation and Jaeger doesn't really like it, either.]

There isn't a specific guide, though at this rate I may write one. But my best advice is to sharpen up any first aid skills that you might have, be prepared for danger in the field. If you don't have any fighting skills, sign up for some basics, including how to handle a firearm safely. Even if you don't shoot, there are enough guns around that basic awareness is important.

Get to know the town as well as you can. Have good maps and pay attention to where you are. Walk around and get familiar. Keep notes and take pictures. If you're going someplace that's known to be hazardous, like Dogtown, let someone know where you're going or take backup.

It's all small things like that, but they're important.

It's still good to be aware of basic safety and handling. It's important to respect the tools that are around you, even if you don't choose to use them yourself.

[he's going to stand firm on this belief, because the last thing he wants is to be accidentally shot by a co-worker.]

It's not the easiest part of the country to weather winter in, I'll admit that. At least some of your clothing allowance should go toward a good coat and boots. Something that you can move in, but that is warm enough to cover you for outdoor expeditions. Layering is good: a decent sweatshirt or long-sleeved sweater as well.

And I may start putting down some notes. Something that I can work on in quiet time. I'm glad that I could be helpful.

That's fair, I suppose. It shouldn't be the first choice, violence is a last resort. I don't enjoy it, I've just come to accept the necessity of it at times.

Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions, and I can try to answer them. I'm sure you've gotten a very colorful variety of responses from the network, we are apparently very good for that if nothing else.
