Summary: Katrina makes rounds to assess the state of her Gloucester home base

• HQ

[ Who's that short-ish young woman walking around the non-restricted parts of HQ, looking at everything like it's hers and she's willing to fight about it? It's Katrina, the angriest mermaid, who has been informed she's been gone for almost a year and now needs to see for herself what's changed.

She ends up in the gym and decides to stay there, training much like she used to. She'll also watch others train, and if there's any advice she can give anyone, she'll go up to them and give it in her usual serious tone. ]


• apartments

[ More wandering and inspecting. Now and then she'll climb a tall tree, the better to see from.

And then there's when she scales the building by way of apartment balconies, making sure it looks like something a strong, athletic human can do. Totally normal! She just wants to get up to the roof. ]


• memorial room

[ She's here to see if the people she remembers are still here, or at least not dead. When she does find someone she knew, she makes the signs to honor them the way she would for her fellows beneath the waves, and sings a short song of mourning for them. Katrina will not respond while she is singing, but she'll be conversational (for her) after. ]

[The immediate impulse in her is to hug the other woman, but being sweaty and holding a glaive stops Mercy from doing that... perhaps mercifully. Instead she stops just a little ways away and offers a fist to Katrina. She's seen people do this in the gym a lot! From what she can tell, it's meant to be friendly.]

I've had time to learn. You been gone a spell. Were you... walking the world?

[Or just vanished? She'd added the siren's name to her wall at Bonnie's house. It seems she'll need to remove it. Praise Pelor!]

[ A fist... instead of an open hand. Katrina has seen other humans do this. Mindful of her strength, she makes a fist and gently taps it against Mercy's.

This is better than shaking hands, and much better than hugging. ]

Not in Gloucester. They say I went back to my home. I do not feel this happen, this... time.

[ She gives Mercy a more appraising look, meets her gaze, and gives a slow nod. ]

Sister is stronger now in body. I see time pass in this way.

[ It takes time to build strength, which proves everyone is right: what to Katrina felt like a few minutes was much longer in Gloucester. ]

[She nods to that before gesturing to some nearby benches and going to sit down.]

Aye. Trying to be. Seen a lot since you been gone. Remind me, what's the last thing you remember happening here? Could fill you in, if you're looking for someone to cover that distance for you.

[ Katrina follows. She doesn't need to sit, but she and Mercy are tribe, and they are equals in importance. ]

I remember... Gloucester people think we make problem for them. They say we fight with words, make mess in their work. Was... difficult to help.

Mercy. Tell me what happen after I... disappear.

[Mercy takes a breath. There's just... so much.]

A lot. Not all of it bad, mind you, but a lot of it.

[She starts where she can from as far back as she can remember. The pieces leading up to Steel's ritual. Those seem the most important to impart.]

So, you remember Ms. Ava? The girl who messed with dreams?

I remember. She is reason Garner is dead.

[ And so, child or not, Katrina wants to fight this Ava. ]

[Mercy's hand on the spear tightens for a moment.]

That she is. She's dead now. Some folk were able to band together and gut her.

[She doesn't know if it was a gutting, but close enough, probably.]

Turns out she was working with someone worse. Someone who was pulling her around like she was doing to us. It's the man Ms. Nia was friends with, who donated a bunch of the equipment we used to use in medical: Zyrian Steel.

[ Katrina hisses, teeth bared briefly, eyes shining. Good. They've avenged Garner. His spirit can rest. ]

They play with ADI. With us. [ She glances around the gym, all too aware who owns this building. ] Who do we trust? I trust you. Sister. And Eda, and others from before I leave and come back.
