Who: Katrina and you!

Summary: Katrina makes rounds to assess the state of her Gloucester home base

• HQ

[ Who's that short-ish young woman walking around the non-restricted parts of HQ, looking at everything like it's hers and she's willing to fight about it? It's Katrina, the angriest mermaid, who has been informed she's been gone for almost a year and now needs to see for herself what's changed.

She ends up in the gym and decides to stay there, training much like she used to. She'll also watch others train, and if there's any advice she can give anyone, she'll go up to them and give it in her usual serious tone. ]

[ More wandering and inspecting. Now and then she'll climb a tall tree, the better to see from.

And then there's when she scales the building by way of apartment balconies, making sure it looks like something a strong, athletic human can do. Totally normal! She just wants to get up to the roof. ]

• memorial room

[ She's here to see if the people she remembers are still here, or at least not dead. When she does find someone she knew, she makes the signs to honor them the way she would for her fellows beneath the waves, and sings a short song of mourning for them. Katrina will not respond while she is singing, but she'll be conversational (for her) after. ]

[Mercy is at the gym when Katrina enters, training with a glaive that she's become much more proficient with in the intervening year since Garner's death. She's just finishing a set of thrusts at a striking dummy that's looking the worse for wear when she notes the siren and stops to double-take.]

Katrina!

[Confusion, surprise... joy! Her expression lights up as she hefts the glaive over her shoulder and hurries toward the siren.]

That really you?

[When she hears the familiar voice, Eda's instinct is not to let herself fall for believing it.

This place has messed with her too many times—voices, images, all sorts of things that were just tricks or lures.

But she still goes to look, and she takes in a sharp breath as she spots Katrina from the doorway to the memorial room.

She doesn't interrupt the song for a few reasons. Partly, she wants to hear it, and that would be rude. But partly… she's not sure she's ready to find out if the siren remembers her time here.

After all, she knows it's possible. But Hunter didn't. And Raine didn't.

Still, it's not long before the song ends, and she does speak up.]

…Kitty?

[ The glaive is what catches Katrina's attention first. Grief sweeps through her like waves in a storm, though only for a moment, because soon she recognizes the person wielding the weapon: Mercy, who once talked her out of one of the Entities' illusions.

Katrina stays where she is as Mercy approaches her, nodding. ]

Yes. Mercy. Sister. I am in Gloucester again. [ Her gaze goes to the glaive. ] You fight well with this.

[ Katrina has not gone so soft that she's unaware of her surroundings even when she's singing, even in a place that should be safe. Still, it's not until she hears the voice that she turns, recognition rendering her face just the slightest bit softer than normal. ]

Eda. Sister. [ She nods. ] I am Kitty. Katrina.

[There's very visible on relief on Eda's face at that response, which may or may not make a whole lot of sense. Either way, she relaxes and steps into the room.]

I was... starting to think I wouldn't see you again.

[If it were anyone else, she'd outright pull them into a hug, but she's not sure she feels like potentially getting bitten. She does, however, move to lean her forehead against Katrina's.]

[ Katrina immediately reciprocates, gently but firmly pressing her forehead to Eda's. She is far from home, but she has a tribe here. When she pulls away, she responds. ]

I do not know what happen. But I am here again. [ A slight pause. ] ADI does not punish you for this tail?

[ She remembers the ADI being unhappy with anyone looking non-human. ]

Winter doesn't work at ADI anymore, but he's visible prowling around town restlessly, and when he spots Katrina he pauses... and squints at her... and tries to figure out if that's really who he thinks it is.

If she doesn't notice him staring, he'll come over eventually, but there's plenty of time for her to stare, back.

[Raine had decided to work out again, finally. Eda isn't there with them, so perhaps they're not doing the full routine, but they are there to try and attempt to stay in shape.

Raine noticed they're being watched. They don't say anything, initially. But watching people is their job now, and they don't recognise the stranger. They address Katrina directly, but keep their distance.]

I haven't seen you around here before. Are you new?

Her finely honed hunter's instincts let her know she's being watched. Katrina scans the area, and once she sees who it is, she goes to him, her gaze as relaxed as it gets when in an exposed, public space.

"Winter. I am here again."

Hi, battle buddy.

[ Katrina doesn't stop watching them, but her stare becomes less critical. ]

I am not new. I was here many tides ago. I am Katrina.

[Although, like Winter, he no longer works for ADI anymore, the man formerly known as Steve (and now can only go by Rogers or Steven) still comes by the apartments or flophouse sometime to visit friends. And he still skirts the edges of the ADI complex, too, not quite patrolling, but not quite not.

He does definitely notice the figure in a tall tree even from some distance, and can't help but approach to see if he's... well. If he's seeing things or not, because that face -]

Katrina? [he calls up, once he's within earshot.]

[OOC Note: Steve's had his first name (specifically Steve) stolen from him, so Katrina won't be able to remember it, even if she normally would. If she knew his last name, though, she can remember that!]

[Though this Raine hasn't ever met Katrina, they do recognise her name from Eda. They relaxed, only a little.]

Oh! I think Eda has spoken about you before...if you remember who she is.

[Raine didn't know if it was a good idea to give out their name to random strangers anymore, but considering this person was previously here...Maybe she's safe.]

My name is Raine.

[Eda starts to respond to the first part, but then she blinks and can't help but let out a little snort. It's a valid question, but Katrina's priorities are always something.

The tail in question lashes, fur and feathers fluffing up a little.]

No, it's... nothing I did. Not like harpy mode. [Which is still embarrassing, even if she likes spending time in that form.]

It's kind of a long story. A bunch of us got turned into weasels. And then a few of us kept some weasel-y bits, after we got it sorted out. [She shrugs, compared to other things that have happened here it's only a mild inconvenience.] The glamour hides it outside anyway.

[ Both his voice and his face are familiar. It takes her a moment, but soon she makes the connection. ]

Rogers.

[ Give her a second to climb down, jumping to the ground those last few yards. ]

Yes. I am Katrina. I am return to Gloucester.

[He looks surprised, but also clearly pleased. Maybe this isn't the best place to be, but at least she's not lost, or whatever happens.]

You are, [he confirms.] Have you been back long? Are you all right? Do you know what happened?

[She can clearly choose to answer all, some, or none of these questions.]

[Rue just so happens to be out on the apartment balcony when their new roomie comes climbing up it.

The owlbear is curled up as best as their seven-foot form will allow in a sturdy piece of patio furniture, a heavy wool blanket over their furry knees, a book held aloft in a feathery paw. They drop the book down just a few inches from their face, so they can stare at the newcomer with giant, unblinking, owl eyes.

Silence.]

He actually smiles a bit when their eyes meet, though the moment is brief, as he is still uncomfortable with eye contact. He pads over to meet her.

"Welcome back, Katrina. You've been gone a while."

The year has given him more experience in acting human, though it's also done some damage to that humanity in other ways. Smiles are an effort, but one he actually makes.

Yes. Eda is sister.

[ If Raine knows Eda, then they are at the very least not a threat. ]

You know Eda... from same world?

[ She thinks she remembers Raine, even if they were a different Raine than this one. ]

Glamour. [ She repeats the word thoughtfully. ] This is... power?

Only few days. I do not know what happen. I have... no change from this.

[ She remembers everything she went through here as if no time at all had passed. ]

This is... strange. They say I disappear many tides ago, but I do not feel this.

[ Katrina us sure this is her apartment, and she is sure this is her roommate. Their scent confirms it. Katrina stares back, predator to predator, glad to have another strong person on her side. ]

Rue.

[ Katrina nods hello. ]

[Ah, so this was intentional! That at least leaves the owlbear setting the book aside gently and rising up to greet the woman, a huge paw held out towards her.]

A pleasure, though I am afraid I do not have the honor of knowing your name. You must be my new flatmate, correct?

Good thing Katrina is used to not smiling. It's part of why she felt comfortable around Winter early on.

"They tell me it is many tides." Months. "Almost one year. I do not feel this time go by."

[ Katrina pulls herself up the rest of the way and climbs onto the balcony so she's standing in front of Rue. Handshakes still feel foreign to her; the fact that Rue's paws are so big makes this feel... less strange.

Laying her palm on Rue's outstretched paw, Katrina nods again. ]

Yes. I am Katrina. I am siren, not human. It is good, more people who are not human.

[ She just feels more comfortable around non-humans. ]

[He nods, looking concerned.] It was a long time ago.

[And he knows what it's like to be missing time. Not a great feeling, at all, no matter how much or how little.]

I'm glad you don't feel different, though. [It's certainly better than the alternative.]

A lot has happened, especially with regard to ADI. Has anyone told you about the change in leadership?
