What better way to observe the people than to attend this festival? To get to know and know of, Elidibus will be a presence in the crowd. Games? Fashion shows? Kitschy festival photos? Probably not if he can avoid it. How long that resolve may last is anyone's guess.
He looks like a youthful man in his twenties, classic college age. With silvery white hair to his shoulders and blue eyes with an internal luminance. Though this latter trait is hidden behind sunglasses on this clear day, so one must get close and at an angle to observe it. Winter's end still brings a chill to the air, so he's wearing a white turtleneck, jeans and brown boots. With a lined brown jacket and a backpack, he might as well be the college kid he appears to be.
Those working in the ADI might have seen Elidibus. He's joined the Research Department and been seen talking to HR, in the library, and the canteen since early February. He might be known by 'Elidibus' or 'Themis Galvus' in those environments. Outside of the office, those living in the D building of the company's assigned apartments will certainly have seen a new tenant of D1 coming and going. Whether they know his name yet is another story.
1. Grave Graves
Elidibus does not have the habit of lingering around graveyards without reason. Today he's not even lingering around the graves for the usual reason he might have back home. The recently disturbed earth around very old graves is a curious mystery. Someone has been up to something, but what? And to what end?
It may not even be a mystery Elidibus needs to worry about. But there has been talk of ashkin and while old graves mean less preserved bodies, perhaps someone wasn't picky. There's other possibilities too, such as grave robbers, the need to hide another body or a more official exhumation. Mortals so often had strange sentimentality about where their dead were buried, even on his world.
"I wonder the purpose of this disturbance," someone might hear him say as they pass, walk up or otherwise linger in the same area. To treat it as a rhetoric or a direct question would be entirely up to the listener; Elidibus has spoken up on purpose regardless.
2. Fundamental Food (Open to single or group, note if okay with threadjacking for the latter.)
Sometimes one has to eat. While Elidibus doesn't experience hunger pangs exactly, it seems he still retains some enjoyment in the experience. Besides which, lingering around food tables and not eating would raise some questions. While he's mingling with the gathering near them, a small selection of the offerings have been assembled on a plate. It is far from a lot and probably not what anyone would consider a meal. At least three different chocolate-dipped somethings have found their way into the mix. It's possible two others have already been enjoyed.
Despite his mysterious existence, he also finds the hot chocolate a comforting warmth.
Elidibus then crosses to the seating arrangements. Table or comfy arrangement around a firepit, either are open for approach but he will make sure the place is already occupied even if there are other free and empty spots.
"May I join you?"
3. Merrily...? Mingling
Food and mysterious gravesites aren't the only reason for Elidibus to be found in the vicinity, though he seems to be quick to move past events someone might try to good-naturedly try to pull him into participating. There's a chance he might pause and approach because he overheard- honestly probably eavesdropping but he's quite good at disguising that he was- or became interested in an individual. For the latter there is a simple request. All but expected from a newcomer to the area.
"Pray forgive me for the interruption. Do you have a moment to speak?"
4. Wildcard Waiting
May the gods grant you luck in any endeavors to strongarm encourage or convince Elidibus to participate in any of the key events of the festival. By which I welcome brainstorming ways to get further involved. Much of his reluctance is more because he's a ghost and his original clothes need to stay within ten feet of him (hence the backpack). Or other wildcardy type things that don't quite fit a prompt! PM, maruah or Discord: Everyworker#8128 if interested!
Sweeping around the park in their extravagant, over-the-top dress, Rue excludes the type of energy that says they're the one keeping everything running smoothly here. So when the question comes, for a brief moment to speak, even though they appear to be on a mission elsewhere, the glamoured owlbear still pauses at the man's inquiry, turning towards him and smiling softly.
"Certainly. How can I help you? Are you quite enjoying yourself?"
Far be it for Elidibus not to appreciate the efforts of one who takes their duty so seriously as to exude a presence of it. He recognizes the glamoured woman from the speech at the beginning of the event. Does he see beneath the illusion? Well that's going to depend on a lot of things, none of which Elidibus has any intention of giving away. Especially since some of those things are ones he shouldn't be doing.
So he smiles the smile of someone who is reserved but sees nothing wrong or different than what seems to be before him and nods his head graciously. He also has to look up. While definitely an adult, he is certainly on the short side for a man.
"Thank you, yes." The path Rue was taking to where she had been heading briefly earns a moment's attention. "Yet this is not a matter which should keep you from your duties. Still if you would speak with me, we can continue on course to your destination if you wish."
Their smile softens, just a touch more warmth blossoming at their sharp features.
"Please, it's not a problem at all. I was only making the rounds, so to speak. I only hope to keep Lady Graves from having to deal with any of the clean up during the festivities. For all that she has done to put this event together, I simply wish for her to be able to focus on enjoying herself."
Rue's hands clasp delicately at their front, head tipping just slightly to the side, smiling at the man.
"Please, what can I help you with, my friend? I don't believe we've been introduced. My name is Delloso de la Rue, but please, I insist you call me Rue. All of my friends do."
Elidibus nods, accepting their words at face value. How to answer their question about his name though? Public is public when it comes down to it and Elidibus has no intention of not abiding by some of the unspoken rules. At least not to call himself by the name he would prefer.
"Themis Galvus. You may call me Themis, should you desire." Though after his introduction, he does seem to pause and consider the hidden proposal. In the end, if it's a name that will put them at ease, then he has no issue using it.
"As you wish." That this is a tacit acceptance of new friendship may still be up for debate. Momentarily his eyes scan the crowds. While Elidibus keeps his sunglasses firmly in place, their height difference probably presents an angle that suggests why. What humans in this world have glowing irises?
"I am new to Gloucester and seeking to know more about the city." Returning his full attention to Rue, Elidibus continues in a pleasant tone full of polite courtesy. "...And for people to connect to and speak about like interests. Have you lived here long?"
His name comes and Rue gives an elegant curtsey in return, throwing out their arms with their billowing sleeves and gently plucking the skirts of their dress with unseen talons.
"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Themis. Welcome to our festival of the Turning Seasons."
Considering Rue's origins in the fey realm and the wide-array of non-humans they've met in this place, the hint of glowing eyes hidden behind sunglasses do not tick off any suspicion on their end. They are quite used to what it means to have to remain hidden, so as far as they are concerned, his secret is safe with them.
"Well, I've only been here for the past few months, but I feel I've come to know this little town quite intimately. What sorts of things interest you? Any particular hobbies? I'd be happy to give out whatever recommendations you should like."
It's as Elidibus expected of someone who would help organize a festival and show signs of being dedicated to keeping it all working smoothly. They would be quickly and well connected regardless of the time they may have spent in this world (if not born to it) and likely have information to spare.
Rue also seems willing offer it. Elidibus offers them a faint smile and speaks with a touch of ruefulness. Listen closely and they might also detect a trace of sadness that comes from distant loss.
"As my friends would oft tell me, I was overly fond of my duties. It was my passion and life's work." Though far be it for him to suggest he had no hobbies or interests at all other than his work. It just seems that it takes him a moment to think. But on a personal level, it is to enjoy the sublime beauty of being able to remember at all.
"Reading and conversation. I enjoy the simple act of listening to one's unique perspective. There were even times when I would yearn for an adventure of my own."
Something he couldn't indulge in. Though once in a rare while, business and adventure could pleasantly overlap. Elidibus stills momentarily, looking as if he might not have intended to speak so much. Whether this is true or artifice it might very well be as hard to tell as whether or not he wanted to be friends with Rue.
"I have found employment in Gloucester, but it will take far less of my time than duties of old." Even though he plans to take on a second position in the ADI, it will still not come close.
"I would not be adverse to new experiences, nor offended if those I meet would find other company favorable."
How funny that this seems to be quite the reoccurring theme among all of those Rue has known in this realm. They believed it to be something unique to link them and their betrothed together, being so bound to the duties expected of them by the courts they felt so alone in, but look how many others identify the same! It's quite fascinating.
"Ah! That does indeed seem to be a problem I hear most frequently since coming into this place. Tell me, what work was it that you were so taken with? Is it something you are able to make a living with here as well? While I don't condone making your work your entire life, loving what you do does make quite the difference in outlook."
Reading and conversation? If they were a touch closer, Rue might give the man a condescending little pat on the head. He most desperately needs better friends and better hobbies.
"What kinds of new experiences pique your interest? Do you enjoy sports? The arts?" Their soft smile quirks, just barely, as they raise an arm and wave out vaguely to the festival around them. "I must say, if you are in need of friends and new activities, you can do no better than today. We have some games going on shortly, if such a thing might be pleasing to you."
"No." Rather than first explain his work before, Elidibus responds to the latter query with a single word that holds an eternity's worth of absolute certainty.
Rue is likely no stranger to long and longer still lifespans. In the moment, the twenty-something looking human has a presence that is many millennia old.
"The full weight and scope of my duties, I did solely for my home and people. Such was its meaning that I could not accept such a burden on the behalf of another's. Nor would I wish to." He speaks in a calm tone and without anger. Elidibus is wanting nothing more than to convey to Rue who could not possibly have known, that it was simply not a matter of doing on Earth that which he gave his all for on Etheirys, his own native world.
That those particulars were so much a part of him that the position had been nigh literally his very life. To the people surrounding them he may have seemed unusually dedicated to his hometown population with the phrasing. Directed at Rue, it may be a small hint that he's away she's not an ordinary citizen.
The feeling of presence fades and with it the emphasis on the gravity of the matter. Elidibus, whose expression had become solemn, allows a brief smile to return.
"Rest assured, much of what made me suitable for my duty will make me qualified for many positions within the organization which has aided me in adjusting to life in this city. I shall not want for work." There it is again, a moment's sadness for those lost peoples. "But for the sake of friends who are no longer here, I would honor their memory and seek the occasional diversion from it."
Perhaps it is for the best Rue didn't have a chance to pat the shorter figure on the head. Or pity him his friends and hobbies for that matter. It is clear those friends were just as beloved as his people and home.
"I would not mind pursuing some form of art. Yet sports..." Elidibus frowns slightly in thought, seemingly back to his former self. "There may be some concerns for now with purely physical activities."
Rue isn't unfamiliar with giving the whole of yourself over to a duty that can only be exclusively performed out in a certain realm, under a very specific set of circumstances. They were the faerie realm's Emissary of Joy for too many millennia to count, the only fey in all of the Feywilds able to feel the particular pulse of fey magic and follow it to where it would burst forth and blossom.
Such a role and title are, obviously, meaningless here. And beyond that, even if Rue was able to continue as the Mistrex of the Bloom, there's no doubt in their mind they would step down from the role on their own.
With the calm, quiet cut of his answer, with the careful explanation given, Rue can tell this man is of the same mind. The sacrifices given so selflessly in the past no longer carry the same weight as before. They see each other both then, as ageless creatures frolicking among humans who have no right to be there.
But Rue's grip on their composure is iron-clad. Their face, especially glamoured, gives nothing away as they daintily flutter their lashes, mouth pinching with feigned worry.
"My most ardent apologies, my friend. I could certainly have been a little more sensitive in my inquiry." Their expression goes warmer, purposely charming as they step forward and wave a hand, beckoning the man to follow. "Now, the art scene in Gloucester is fascinating and quite active! Whether you prefer the theatricality of performance art or the quiet sensitivity of an art studio, there's so much to see. I find my betrothed and I often attend movies at the cinema and are often swept away in the vibrant stories splayed across the screen. Truly, there's more than enough to keep one occupied."
Rather than no right, no true desire. At least on Elidibus's part. He has a world he loves and has sacrificed for and wishes to return to. It is not this one.
For Elidibus and his people, it was only natural to find some work or task or duty to dedicate themselves to. And should that journey not be cut short by untimely demise, see it to a conclusion, however much time in a nigh endless lifespan that might take. The work and duty Elidibus described was no different. So much so that he and those who filled related roles embodied the title and responsibilities as their very lives.
Elidibus looks at Rue and indeed it seems they see one another. There is an ever so subtle nod that acknowledges some level of awareness the tall fey was capable of understanding what lay underneath his explanation, regardless of their opinion on it.
His own composure in the wake suggests while the emotions were real, he may well have intended to show them. Elidibus accepts the apology with absolute grace.
"It would be normal to expect otherwise. Do not worry further." He falls into step with Rue's pace and listens to their recounting of the potential arts one may pursue. Mention of performing arts and cinema draws his attention.
"Hm. I believe my cousin will be glad to hear theatre is a part of this city's culture." Elidibus, you are trying to find ideas for hobbies of your own, not your brethren and colleague's.
"I would not mind trying my hand at the work of a craftsman." And it would be interesting to see how this magic-less world without its catalysts would make things by hand. There is a short pause before Elidibus adds. "There is occasion where I have found myself refreshed while playing a musical instrument."
"Oh? Is your cousin here as well? That's quite lucky from what I understand. Most don't come along with anyone from their home realm. You and I seem to be some of the only exceptions to that I've heard."
Besides Rue's favorite turtle twins, but that's for the man to discover later.
The festival is in full swing, full of laughs and delighted yells and overall cheer. And Rue simply takes it all in with small touch of pride blossoming within their chest, shoulders straightening just a touch more than normal. To be out walking among the happiness they've created is a feeling they'll never tire of.
"You'll find no lack of music to inspire you in this place. The options of genre alone are staggering. I've only just begin to delve into it, mostly on the recommendations of others. I imagine I wouldn't know where to start otherwise. But there are quite a few who play instruments among us." A surprising amount, honestly. "I've always longed to play, but I've just never had the, ah, touch for it."
One shouldn't talk too much about another's relations after all. That would be rude. As for Elidibus's 'cousin'...
"I find myself fortunate to have found someone familiar in this new place," he answers with sincerity. Emet-Selch may not be a cousin by blood, but Elidibus is not uncomfortable in the least to regard him as family.
Music though. Music is a safe enough hobby to begin with, whether or not it ends up being a ruse to get closer to the people who are part of this land or found themselves cast adrift upon it. But Elidibus made mention that he would want to pay tribute to those who are no longer here. And while he may lie about many things, that is not one of them. Thus he will try to fulfill the claim, in the time he has been given.
However fleeting.
"The culture of music is indeed pervasive. And seemingly on par with sports." Or would that be the other way around? Elidibus isn't certain. For now it seems more interesting that Rue does not find themselves musically inclined. At least for instruments. He wonders if it is aptitude or capability.
But it would not do to admit he might be able to tell there's some sort of illusion over their true appearance, given what it means to be able to do so in the first place.
"I am sorry to hear you find yourself in a position not to fulfill that desire," Elidibus replies. His tone is politely sympathetic without being overbearing. "In such absence, do you enjoy singing? Or is your preference to listen?"
"My thanks," Elidibus answers before claiming a place. He takes care to claim a place that leaves seats to either side of Neal free in case the missing fiancé makes an appearance. Well that and it is only polite to not crowd so close to a complete stranger.
There's a bit of juggling plate and drink and backpack until the latter is settled somewhere he can keep an eye on it. All is done neatly. Arrangements made, he introduces himself, not as Elidibus, but by the name he should be going with in the public eye.
"I am Themis. Are you enjoying the gathering thus far?" His expression is one of polite interest and there should be nothing too alarming about the brief study he gives Neal.
Neal appreciates it. He likes having Malcolm close, and he knows it's mutual on Malcolm's part. They're not codependent. Exactly. Precisely. But they're paranoid and clingy, absolutely.
"Neal. It's a pleasure to meet you." He looks away, examining the events around them, the cheerful faces and enthusiasm. "I'm loving it, honestly. We needed something like this."
He turns back to face his fellow diner. "You're relatively new, right? I can't remember seeing you around before."
Elidibus nods. Gatherings like this might be considered bread and circuses. Something to give the masses a superficial reprieve and distraction from the horrors and burdens of life. Particularly on this star. Though the Ancient has a suspicion the motives of the organizers in this case are far more altruistic.
"I would agree. It is important to have time to set aside ones burdens and duty to rest," he answers. As if he didn't have a single problem whatsoever doing the same. Ever. [ He is so bad at taking a break I can't even. ]
Again comes a nod. "I arrived only a short time ago." Probably barely two weeks at this point, but who is counting? "The ADI has been most generous in offering their aid. And I have been fortunate to find others from my home have also come to live here."
Elidibus takes a moment to sample some of the food on his plate. This corporeal form has not been robbed of taste, even if he couldn't call himself 'living' in the traditional sense. With that being said, the staples on this world have been an almost unique experience to say the least. Though he might have several internal questions about what constitutes a slice of sandwich meat.
"Though I'm aware many have decided to seek alternative means to sustain themselves. Not without their own reasons of course. Do you know aught of such conditions?" Elidibus isn't judging anyone for having eschewed what the ADI offers. Who with any wisdom would immediately trust the first hand to reach out under such circumstances after all?
The way this guy talks is fascinating. He's very clearly not from around here, as it were, and it's not a second language thing. The diction is too precise and practiced.
"I know a few, actually. People who've had trouble with corporate administration, for the most part." And he doesn't trust ADI either, at all, but there's a time and a place for that kind of thing. "How are you finding it here?"
At times it's like he's fresh from a weekend at a Ren Faire and hasn't gotten out of the habit of 'ye olde speech'. Only it does feel like it's a bit more natural than an affected pattern.
"Hm." How is Elidibus finding it? He appears to give the question a moment of proper speculation before his answer. "I am not finding it difficult to settle in," he finally answers. "Though I've not been here long enough to offer a proper assessment on the matter." The faint smile that follows seems a touch wry.
"I have found some comfort that familiar face arrived on the same day. I am told that it is unusual?" It's left hanging as a question to see whether Neal has some insight to offer.
Wednesday is avoiding the festivities at all costs - A blanket race? Really? When there are so many sports with more potential for violence? - and instead lurking where she feels so much more at home.
Graveyards are supposed to be quiet, solitary places, unassaulted by the frolicking people that infest nearly every space in the world.
Today, however, that is not the case.
Today, everyone is here. And, therefore, Wednesday would rather not be here. She'll come back with a shovel when it's dark and quiet and she can be alone with the dead.
She's beginning to leave when she passes by a man contemplating one of the overturned graves.
A blanket race where one wiggles around obstacles like a worm is not an idea of fun for Elidibus either and while he has seen mortals do many, many weird things in the name of entertainment, that one is still very much questioned.
On the other hand, what an interesting answer that has just been given his not-quite-rhetoric. The youngish looking man seems to take the input seriously after looking over the young lady.
"You are correct." Look, it was a perfectly reasonable suggestion. "Though my understanding of the laws and customs in this country are such that it would not be appropriate to do so."
Elidibus could be an eccentric man, dryly cynical and just playing along with a presumption that Wednesday is not serious. He could also be trying to find out if she is.
"To pursue such actions, one would have to be discreet," he remarks in a mild manner, still appearing thoughtful. There's no revulsion at the idea. At least none that he's giving away.
In a way, it's refreshing to meet someone whose immediate response to the suggestion of gravedigging isn't unrestrained disgust or a threat to call the police.
"I've found that there are very few people who are bothered by either laws or customs in a graveyard after dark." She's certainly not one of them. And neither are the people in the ground.
Elidibus is nothing if not open-minded. And possibly willing to disregard the laws of the land if doing so would be best suited to the circumstances.
If nothing more he looks like he taking Wednesday's answer seriously. And not in a disapproving way. Her words suggest something of that nature might already have occurred by the hands of another. Most corpses that escape from the earth do not tend to turn around and politely restore the landscape after all.
"With the size of this graveyard and its location, even the advantages of the night would allow more than a few to pursue such matters without drawing attention." He then remarks. This conversation could just as well be about the people who dug up these graves already than the prospect of doing it himself.
"Though there would be an advantage to having companions." The effort of digging. A lookout. The place might be tucked away but it's still a public area. Local law enforcement probably does keep an eye out for wayward kids.
Elidibus is not used to having to consider such matters. Yet he will do so anyway especially under his current unfortunate shortcomings.
Wednesday doesn't see any point beating around the metaphorical bush. If this man wants to come gravedigging with her, why not get that out in the open?
"If you're suggesting that you'd like to come here after dark and help me dig up these overturned graves, you should know that I prefer to work alone." She isn't saying 'no.' Not exactly. But if someone wants to accompany her, they need to understand that she's allowing it under duress.
And because he's right: it's a lot easier to get away with things when you have a lookout.
She pauses for a moment, looking around as she works herself up to inviting him along.
"I'll be here at midnight." Another pause. "Bring your own shovel."
While you may have departed, I at least wished to send this
There are many reasons to like working alone. A partner means the need to share. Or someone that will give testimony or blackmail. Or do the work poorly. Elidibus has less provocative reasons than all these.
"It would be inefficient to do it twice over. And I would welcome your personal perspective."
He would probably have managed to show up anyway. But with an invitation there will be less tension. Elidibus thus waits patiently for her to make the choice one way or another, both because he is patient and because her choice really wouldn't make a difference.
"Ah yes, such tools will be needed," he responds in a thoughtful tone that indicates he had forgotten he would need something so mundane. "Until such time, then."
After a polite nod, Elidibus will take his leave as if nothing more than a brief exchange of pleasantries with a passing stranger might have occurred instead of plans to commit a class D felony.
Well one would not want to be seen hanging around overlong at a future crime scene before such an act now, would they?

"I have found employment in Gloucester, but it will take far less of my time than duties of old." Even though he plans to take on a second position in the ADI, it will still not come close.
"I would not be adverse to new experiences, nor offended if those I meet would find other company favorable."
no subject

"There may be some concerns for now with purely physical activities."
no subject

Talons, after all, don't make it very easy.

He gestures to the position opposite. "My fiance is around here somewhere, but there's plenty of room."

There's a bit of juggling plate and drink and backpack until the latter is settled somewhere he can keep an eye on it. All is done neatly. Arrangements made, he introduces himself, not as Elidibus, but by the name he should be going with in the public eye.
"I am Themis. Are you enjoying the gathering thus far?" His expression is one of polite interest and there should be nothing too alarming about the brief study he gives Neal.
no subject
"Neal. It's a pleasure to meet you." He looks away, examining the events around them, the cheerful faces and enthusiasm. "I'm loving it, honestly. We needed something like this."
He turns back to face his fellow diner. "You're relatively new, right? I can't remember seeing you around before."
no subject
Who with any wisdom would immediately trust the first hand to reach out under such circumstances after all?
no subject
"I know a few, actually. People who've had trouble with corporate administration, for the most part." And he doesn't trust ADI either, at all, but there's a time and a place for that kind of thing. "How are you finding it here?"
no subject
"Hm." How is Elidibus finding it? He appears to give the question a moment of proper speculation before his answer. "I am not finding it difficult to settle in," he finally answers. "Though I've not been here long enough to offer a proper assessment on the matter." The faint smile that follows seems a touch wry.
"I have found some comfort that familiar face arrived on the same day. I am told that it is unusual?" It's left hanging as a question to see whether Neal has some insight to offer.

"Digging them up would be one way to find out."
no subject
At least none that he's giving away.
no subject
"I've found that there are very few people who are bothered by either laws or customs in a graveyard after dark." She's certainly not one of them. And neither are the people in the ground.
no subject
Yet he will do so anyway especially under his current unfortunate shortcomings.
no subject
"If you're suggesting that you'd like to come here after dark and help me dig up these overturned graves, you should know that I prefer to work alone." She isn't saying 'no.' Not exactly. But if someone wants to accompany her, they need to understand that she's allowing it under duress.
And because he's right: it's a lot easier to get away with things when you have a lookout.
She pauses for a moment, looking around as she works herself up to inviting him along.
"I'll be here at midnight." Another pause. "Bring your own shovel."
While you may have departed, I at least wished to send this
"It would be inefficient to do it twice over.
