Summary: Here's the barbecue log! Eating, playing games, having a bonfire and sleep-over on the beach!

ɪ. ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ

Congratulations, you've made it to the Good Harbor Beach September barbecue! With the weather cooling, but still pleasant enough, it's a pleasure to have a hangout involving ADI's residents and those who live at Bonnie's. There are still so many people who don't know one another, and many to strengthen bonds with, so the hours your dearest Wanda and Ren spend cooking and flipping and seasoning are nothing but rewarding! Seeing people enjoying themselves is great and it's motivating for them to keep doing these encounters every now and then.

On the menu, we have:
- Burgers;
- Steaks with jacked potato sides;
- Ribs;
- Zucchini-and-Pecorino fritters;
- Several different salads, including ovcharska;
- Aubergine kebabs with charred onion salsa;
- Salmon yakitori;
- Takoyaki;
- Cupcakes
- Apples and honey;
- Cherry dumplings;
- Sarmale filled with rice;
- Bundevara (pumpkin pie);

For drinks, there's a selection of alcohol, as well as coffee, water, tea, and a variety of sodas. Take in the nice view, jump on the ocean, sink your toes in the sand and enjoy yourselves. There aren't any usable tables, but there are several blankets on the floor for your perusal.

With bellies full, now it's when the real fun begins. There are a few decks of cards being passed around, as well as one of their single tables now organized to a beer-pong competition. Individually, games such as Never Have I Ever, as well as Truth or Dare can be seen, and those who wish to use their skills for entertaining are more than welcome to do so.

A little bonding here, a little drunken chatting there, this is your time to shine!

ɪɪɪ. ᴀ ʙᴏɴꜰɪʀᴇ

With those who have a curfew to worry about in mind, a bonfire is lit, and a few tents are set around the beach (may have to be shared). If anyone's got a nice story, now it's the time to share it, or perhaps if anyone can play an instrument, it's about time to break it out of its case. The night will be lively until the early hours of the morning, and of course, mindful of those who couldn't stay up this late.

The next morning, everyone will be properly thanked for their attendance and tupperwares will be distributed with leftovers for those who'd like to take some food home, the beach will be cleaned impeccably and everyone will go their own way, hopefully with smiles and a new sense of unity and connection from the amazing night they've just experienced.

"Over there--white, opaque and thick." She points it out. "Greek yogurt works similarly to it in a lot of applications, actually."

The only condiments he actually recognizes are mustard and ketchup, but there's a few white ones. He drifts over to get a dollop of each. And the mustard and ketchup, while he's at it. It seems like those should go with the burger. He can experiment.

First, though. "You came to this, too. To. Have fun?" He sounds skeptical about the very idea of "fun".

She actually pauses for several seconds before answering that question.

"No, fun isn't really why I came here. I came here to be seen here. To see others here. To get to know those I'm working with. If there's fun to be had, that's secondary to understanding the social dynamics at play, watching who's got their guard down, who's still on the outskirts, who has lots of friends. Who needs help figuring out what to eat."

That last is paired with a bit of a wry look.

He returns it with a flat, unimpressed look. It's not his fault he's not used to this much choice, dammit. People shouldn't put this much on offer without some sort of instruction.

Still, her reasoning is sound, and much more straight-forward than "have fun", no matter what Kate had to say about this get-together. "Any useful observations so far?"

"The people playing never-have-I-ever are giving up information about themselves freely. Some of it pretty personal. Most of them are drinking alcohol; they feel safe getting drunk in this crowd. They trust the rest of us. My roommates didn't gravitate toward the games, though." She points out Malcolm and Tim subtly.

"Doesn't surprise me, to be honest. There's a few people I haven't seen here yet, either. Mr. Bouchard would look out-of-place at this sort of event. I'm more surprised I haven't caught a glimpse of Caduceus, though. There's even vegan kebabs he can eat."

Neither of her roommates are people he's spoken with yet-- not that, that means much. There's a lot of people he hasn't spoken with. Caduceus, though, he knows: "The one with the screaming flute. And the tail." Then: "My roommates convinced me to come. They're both here."

Though the never-have-I-ever is not a game he'll play, since he doesn't know enough to know if he'd done any of those things. And drinking is definitely not happening. He does, however, try one of the dumplings after offering his own datapoint.

“Was it hard for them to convince you?” Meredith still doesn’t completely know what to make of Winter, but most of the reasons that come to mind for his roommates wanting him to come along are well-intentioned at the core. Maybe they were the ones who told him the point was to have fun.

Maybe for them, it is.

“I am glad to see you here, regardless of why you came.”

"Belova had a good point," he allows. "About such a large gathering of other-world people being a good target. So I came for protection."

Which is to say, going the "fun" angle didn't even remotely sway him. So he's not here for that, either.

"Observation is a secondary mission goal," he admits, as well. Because he really can't be among people without at least observing something about them. He has to watch. It's the only way to stay safe, to know who the threats are.

"The protection part, that's why I'm glad. I do feel safer, knowing you're here and watching over everyone." For threats from the outside and from within. "Though I'm curious what you're noticing that I'm not."

That actually, maybe pathetically who knows, makes him perk up a little. Somebody besides his team, his roommates, finds his presence makes them feel safer? He... likes that. He won't say so, but there's a kind of pleased relief in his expression, even as he finishes chewing the second half of the dumpling.

He's less sure if he likes that, honestly.

"Threat analysis, mostly. That one. Dangerous but leashed, careful." He's looking at Jaeger. "That one, dangerous but explosive. Craves attention." That's Loki. "That one doesn't eat meat. Not a huge physical threat, but she has potential. I am training her, too." That's Monika. "Belova is keeping tabs on me." Which is only right, as she's his team. Then he frowns a bit, and adds, "Kate is drinking too much already."

"The first one--Jaeger? The funhouse did a number on him. I got to see him a little less...restrained. I would not want to be his enemy for real." Oddly enough, there's almost a tone of fondness behind that.

She nods along with the rest of his assessments before smiling slightly. "Belova and Kate are your roommates, then?"

"Yes. Yelena Belova, Kate Cordello." Because Meredith probably ought to know their full names, at least. He can't see any security risk in sharing them. "Kate is also learning from me." That's three students, these days, a comfortable number, but any more would likely get unwieldy. He'd have to start group sessions, and who wants that?

He's just glad Yelena doesn't need it, too: he already taught her, he knows. A long, long time ago. And she has grown and changed, so perhaps she knows more than he does, now. Not likely, but possible.

"Which ones are yours." That seems important knowledge. If there's ever trouble for her, he needs to know who is most likely to know where she is or who to blame.

"Tim Drake and Malcolm Bright." She points them out in the crowd for him, not needing very long to locate either of them; she's been paying attention to what both of them are up to.

However, Winter being as observant as he is, likely sees her wince a bit when she lifts her arm to point. She had called off the last two training sessions, citing an injury, and now it's more apparent what might have happened.

"They both look out for me. But they're both inexperienced in some matters I'm more used to, that are important here."

He isn't going to pry into the arm thing, though frankly he's probably noticed already that she's holding herself with more signs of pain than usual. Up-close confirmation is always a plus, even if it's discouraging. He's been kind of quietly hoping that their work would help mitigate her problem, building up muscle and flexibility.

Ah, well. Instead, he pries into the more pertinent part of that: "Which matters are they inexperienced in?" Just in case they're matters he can help with, too.

"Budgeting. Coupon clipping. Meal planning and prep to optimize ingredients. Practical matters. They're both--and I say this with love--obnoxious rich boys."

She doesn't exactly expect that to be Winter's area of expertise, but he's at least certain to be practical.

Aw, no, those are definitely not skills he has and can help with. Practical he may be, but he's also lacking in most of the practical experience that would help him get by in the world alone. Helpful roommates and ADI are about the only benefits he's got, in that department.

He has to ask, though. Maybe it will help him learn? "What's a. Coupon?"

"A piece of paper that allows you a discount when buying a particular product, or a product from a particular brand. It saves you money and makes the brand happy because you're buying their product, not their competitor's."

It's not the most surprising question he could have asked, really.

"Capitalism is confusing," he mutters, mostly to himself, shaking his head. Then, more for her sake, he adds, "I have a lot to learn. I don't know if my roommates know about coupons."

Of course, he has done exactly zero grocery shopping since he got here, letting Kate handle that for the most part, occasionally Yelena, and getting most of his meals at the ADI canteen anyway.
