Headline News #6
Headlines
Like most cities of a certain size, Gloucester gets its daily news from its local paper. Stories concerning local matters are printed side by side with national and international stories aggregated from other sources. For the most part the news is what one would expect in a mundane modern world: business openings, politics, crime, and human interest stories. Every so often, though, something pops up that could be more significant...or might be nothing more than what it appears on the surface.
The following headlines are items of potential interest that appear in the paper throughout July. Summaries represent one or more articles, editorials, press releases, or letters to the editor on a particular subject. Players are encouraged to incorporate these items into their characters' understanding of current events as well as use them for plotting. If you would like your character to perform deeper research or investigations, please pose any questions to the designated mod comment. Players are welcome to use this post for IC discussion and threads related to these news items, or to create their own posts or messages for that purpose.
➥ Copernicus Founder Found Dead
(cw: widespread economic hardship)
In what authorities are calling an accidental death. Zyrian Steel was found dead at his New Horizons launch party in Wolf Trap, WV. The engineering tycoon has no living relatives, and sources familiar with his estate have noted that much of his wealth was slated to be donated to a variety of charities and scholarship programs. However, authorities have also announced that there has been a financial breach, and Mr. Steel's estate has been robbed of a significant sum of money. Police and attorneys for the estate are currently discussing what might be done and how to catch the person responsible. "There are a lot of young scientists and engineers who aren't going to have the funds they need for their education and research because of this person. Whoever decided to exploit Mr. Steel's death is absolutely despicable," a spokesman for the estate said in a statement Tuesday. "We hope that the person responsible does the right thing and returns Mr. Steel's funds so that they can be dispersed per his final wishes."
Copernicus' stock prices have taken a major blow and a number of projects are being paused or completely shut down in the wake of Mr. Steel's death. Notable retraining efforts in the Appalachia region are being stalled with little relief in sight for beleaguered miners still reeling from the collapse of the FYRE mining conglomerate over a year ago. Mrs. Paulette Castle, CFO for Copernicus, will oversee the transition of the company and the quick hunt for a new CEO. Mrs. Castle had this to say, "We mourn Zyrian's loss. He was a man with a vision of the world that so few could imagine. He saw possibilities in the impossible and made dreams into realities. Copernicus will be refocusing on medical prosthetics in the wake of his death. This company was founded on the idea of bridging the gap between man and machine and giving every single person the same opportunities. We will return to our roots when we're hurting most."
➥ Next Stop: Imagination
Mickey Etcher is a name fast up and coming on this coast as only months after contributing to a very successful exhibit in Buffalo, he's set his sights to a younger demographic. Welcome to the Imagination Station, where the only limitation is you! Step inside and you'll be delighted with optical illusions, puzzles of the mind, and adventures of the soul. While this interactive museum park is geared towards a younger crowd, sources insist attendees of all ages are sure to have a blast, so bring the whole family down and see what your mind can do!
➥ The Menace of Murderous Geese Unleashed
(cw: animal attacks)
In a shocking turn of events, a series of vicious attacks by a flock of geese has struck fear into the hearts of residents in the beleaguered community of Gloucester, Massachusetts. These seemingly harmless creatures, known for their waddling and honking, have now turned into ruthless avian assailants, leaving locals terrified to venture near their preferred habitats.
Over the past week, numerous reports have emerged from various parts of town, detailing terrifying encounters with the murderous geese. Witnesses describe the geese as unusually aggressive and displaying predatory behavior, stalking families and focusing on children and the elderly. "It took a chunk out of my arm," said one resident interviewed at Addison Gilbert Hospital. The man, 64, was being treated for lacerations caused by the unusually large tooth-like protrusions in geese's beaks. Police are encouraging people to keep their distance and report sightings of the aggressive geese to Animal Control (555) 817-9344.
➥ Big Renovations for a Little Square
Of course there's Spring Cleaning, but what about Summer? Smackdab in the middle of Downtown, there's change on the horizon. The small strip of stores that used to be Anne's Gables and a few other novelty shops are finally being put to rest and cleared away for something new. Gloucester will soon sport a charming town center complete with fountain, miniature park, and a new art installation that's very hush hush. Guess we'll all just have to wait with baited breath to see what the young local artist has in store for the old stores!
➥ Construction Crew Become Accidental Archaeologists
More news from downtown Gloucester's active construction site: members of the demolition crew have uncovered a remnant of Dogtown history in the form of an eighteenth century wax seal stamp. Found underneath the flagstones of the entry to the square, the stamp is in remarkably good condition for having survived possible centuries pressed into the earth under the weight of stone and countless passersby. Bearing a family crest that prominently features a wolf's head in profile, the stamp has been identified as a mark of identity used by the Wolfe family of Dogtown.
According to Simone Clark, curator of Hammond Castle, "It's quite the find for local history. We know remarkably little about the lives of the Wolfe family despite period sources indicating they were prominent citizens in Dogtown's heyday--pillars of the community, even. We don't even know exactly where their house was located within Dogtown; while we know they were located in the very heart of the town and that they were likely able to afford a much grander home than their neighbors, in the end just like other structures of the period it's been basically obliterated from the landscape by the ravages of time. If anyone were to find and excavate the site of the Wolfe house, I'm certain we would uncover answers to a great many questions historians still have about Dogtown."
Dogtown remains closed to visitors and would-be archaeologists alike due to ongoing safety concerns. The curious must satisfy themselves with a visit to Hammond Castle to see the Wolfe family wax seal stamp, which is now on temporary display.
➥ Lurking in the Deep
(cw: sea monsters)
Reports are fast coming in about a shadowy presence swimming deep in the boating channel in town. Local sailors are mixed on the validity of these claims, but some locals have also sworn they've seen a beast of the deep and a call has gone out to bring back one of its teeth as proof.
Experts assure there's no way anything as large as people are claiming could survive in the channel without being seen by more people and remind everyone that the channel is not safe for swimming and children should be discouraged from playing around the banks to avoid falling in.
➥ What Did You Say, Dummy?
(cw: puppets, dolls, and ventriloquist's dummies)
Move over, Jeff Dunham, the youths have found ventriloquism, and it's not just for the least popular kids anymore. There's been a small boom across social media, but especially on TikTok, of young people taking to ventriloquism. There are even a few notable TikTokers who seem to have switched over entirely to doing videos with their home-made puppets. The craze has led to a spike in sales of mannequins, articulated dolls, and the custom clothes associated with them. Who knows how long this latest trend will last. Get in on it today! My puppet said it's a great idea.
