[The nostalgic smile certainly seemed to confirm that first part.]
Oh yeah? Caught a game at Hexside or...? [She knows he wound up playing flyer derby with Luz's friends, but she doesn't know all the details of how much time he wound up spending with them. She won't pry, but she is curious.]
Not exactly. I was headed back to the castle and heard people cheering so I... [He makes a swooping motion with his hand.] I flew over to see what was so exciting. I guess part of me was hoping it was flyer derby match.
[He seems a bit embarrassed to admit it. It was shortly after his infiltration of the school, and though he had discovered social media, he wasn't good at it.]
[That's kind of sad, so Eda figures that's probably not the best part to focus on. At least he's not spending all his time in the castle these days.]
You really like that game, huh? [She doesn't mean to make him miss it, but she really is curious to hear him talk about something he enjoys. Last time he was here she sort of knew about the Flyer Derby business, but he didn't remember it yet.]
[He hums, rubbing his hands together and feeling a little self-conscious.] It was the first game I'd ever played.
[Though now he can add Campball to the list. Turns out he might just like sports in general.]
And the first time I ever really interacted with people my own age. [And the first time he'd started to feel that the way things were was...not quite right. But that was a messy path to go down, so he shrugs.] It was fun.
Wow, you really didn't used to get out much, huh? [Eda doesn't sound amused in a mean way, but she does say it before she thinks better of it. Either way, she knows he didn't, but it's still... wild just how little.]
Seemed like Luz's friends like you, though. [From the part she followed, at least.]
[And that's all kinds of depressing, not that that's news at this point. Best move on, for now.]
You know, I don't think I ever heard the full story there. [She won't pry, but she's curious, and she thinks it might do him some good to talk about his friends.]
Sounds like it. [Eda agrees mildly, because it's nice to hear him able to talk about it like it's funny, so she can probably find it a little funny too.]
Honestly? Now I really want to hear it. [She still won't insist, but she's really curious how that all went down.]
Really? [He looks skeptical and considers it for a moment (She's not making fun of him, is she? He can't tell.)] Well, fine, but stop me when you get bored. [From past experience, he's gathered no one actually wants to hear him talk at length with his "annoying voice".
He starts walking to the side-lines where he left his waterbottle.]
So there was supposed to be this recruitment meeting, and Belos left me in charge of the coven heads, buuut they decided to reschedule. [He shrugs it off like it's nothing, and it shouldn't bother him. He's not even part of the system anymore. But it did bother him, how much they just...did not care. Belos had said his being put in charge was a "test", and he'd failed before he even started.]
Darius said I should go out and find recruits myself. Well, after he stole my cloak, made fun of my sewing, and insulted my abilities by comparing them to last Guard, who was apparently much more powerful... [Boy does that bring up a whole lot of questions now that he knows more about the previous Golden Guards.] A-anyway, I think he was just trying to get rid of me. [He waves his hands quickly.] Like, out of his hair, not like...rid of rid of.
Will do. [Which is an obnoxious way of saying she isn't bored if she doesn't. And to be fair, she's not really planning to. While she is one of the people who's complained about his voice, that was before she actually cared what the kid had to say.
She walks with him, still curious for the moment.]
Somehow I'm not surprised. [Leaving a kid in charge of people who definitely weren't going to listen to him seems... well it might be funny if not for everything else she's gathered about how the Emperor treated him.
The next part gets a snort, and some of her own mental questions about the previous Golden Guards, but she doesn't voice those.]
Yeah, that... sounds about right for him. I mean, the really annoying part. Murder would've been new.
[Of course, she's not sure she's ever told Hunter she ever knew Darius well enough to find him annoying.]
[He huffs a quiet laugh at the last thing she says.] He's okay. I mean, definitely annoying, but...okay. [After all, the guy gave him a scroll, kept Flapjack a secret, and gave him a place to crash after he ran away from home the Coven.
He shrugs.] I ended up at Hexside trying to recruit students. Big surprise, no one was interested. [His tone is sarcastic, but it really had been a big surprise at the time. Who knew that no one wanted to leave their friends and families behind to join an oppressive regime??]
But that's how I met Willow and Gus. They were trying to put a Flyer Derby team together. [He puffs up a bit.] They were so impressed by my flying skills they asked me to join.
[He's leaving a few things out - like how he lost his boot to a griffin and Willow snaring him in vines and dragging him through the ground.]
If you say so. [But she sounds mild. While they may not be friends anymore, apparently he was part of the rebellion, and right now she even misses her former friends.
There's another laugh at big surprise, although to be honest that's interesting. A lot of kids certainly wanted to join, back when she was there. It's nice if that's changing.]
Oh yeah? You must be pretty good then... I mean, they're friends with Luz and they don't want to join the Emperor's Coven, so I think they've got their heads on straight.

I'm lucky they ever spoke to me again.

[It's from all the training. Too bad it came at the expense of a real childhood.
But he'd rather talk about his friends.]
They do. I didn't understand it at the time. ...Wish I had.

Well... better late than never, huh?
[If not, they probably wouldn't be his friends now. But she wouldn't be surprised if they're as forgiving as Luz, too. She's big on that after all.]
