Who: Cortana and ...you!
When: Throughout September
Where: ADI apartments + various locations around town
Summary: Cortana runs some tests in preparation for her plan to transfer herself to a robotic body + supernatural music interfering with errand running
Warnings: Fainting spell + possible mention of nightmares in the last prompt. Will warn for anything else that comes up.
A) There's a roomba wandering the apartment buildings.
It can be most often found in the hallways of building A, but that doesn't mean it never shows up in the others. At first glance it might seem ordinary, but there's a sort of purposefulness to its movements that an ordinary roomba would lack. It's not mindlessly covering as much ground as possible in an attempt to properly clean the floors; in fact, it doesn't appear to be cleaning anything at all. It moves in a straight, or at least mostly straight, line down the hallway, occasionally bumping into obstacles (primitive sensors suck) but does a remarkably good job of navigating around them ...at least until it bumps into your feet.
...Hey, Cortana recognizes those feet! Or at least, she thinks she does. Roombas can sort of see the floor under and in front of them but they don't see very well and Cortana is trying to limit herself to the abilities of the system she's currently inhabiting. She gently bumps against the feet in question before doing a little circle around you, whoever you are. Hi friend!
B) Apparently Cortana got a package in the mail. It's a pretty big one too, the box doing a pretty good job of blocking her view as she tries to carry it to her apartment. She's stumbling around a bit awkwardly as she tries to avoid tripping or bumping into anything. It's probably kind of funny to watch, honestly.
...You might want to get out of her way though, lest she bump into or trip over you.
C) There's a strange robot wandering the apartment buildings again. This time it's a more advanced design, modular, with several possible configurations:
D) Oh hey! Cortana is actually out doing something other than playing with her new robots for once.
Or at least, she was.
Caught in the rain while on her way back from running some errand or other, she's taking shelter under a tree when the music reaches her ears. It's nice-the audio receptors on the robot bodies just aren't as good, when they even have them, roombas can't hear unless you hack them to do so-and she'll spend several minutes just listening, and listening...
She's not stressed, but transferring between systems and forms as much as she's been doing takes power, and she's been cutting back on the whole 'scaring people into practicing proper cybersecurity' teaching tactic, so she's been running low...
Yeah she's out. One moment she's got her eyes closed and an expression of peace on her face, the next she collapses bonelessly into the mud.

C) There's a strange robot wandering the apartment buildings again. This time it's a more advanced design, modular, with several possible configurations:
- A wheeled robot is driving through the hallways. It's a bit faster and more maneuverable than a roomba, but it's still a bit clunky in comparison to a human-and it absolutely cannot handle stairs. Which is why one might find Cortana in her normal hologram body carrying the thing between floors.
- This time the robot is still in a wheeled configuration, but it's also equipped with an arm. It's a bit awkward, and even slower and clunkier than the first version, having to fold the arm up in order to move without tipping over, but it has one ability in particular that is proving to be invaluable: it can operate the elevator.
- This version doesn't have wheels (or an arm), but stubby little legs! Cute! ...And also very slow and awkward. Still, it can move around outside without immediately getting stuck, so Cortana has taken it outside and is now 'joyriding' on the lawn.
- No new configuration here, Cortana just managed to send her temporary body tumbling down the stairs by accident and a bunch of those oh so convenient modular parts popped right off and scattered over the floor. Her bound flash drive took a bit of a hit too-her hologram's nose is distinctly bloody and there's a lot of grumbling, pained noises, and swearing as she picks up the mess she made.
D) Oh hey! Cortana is actually out doing something other than playing with her new robots for once.

Cortana, that's who. Or at least, she's not supposed to be, because she actually has a long list of stupid decisions she's made and she's totally going to add to it right now.
"Well it's not like I have anything better to do..." Yes? That was a yes, Eda.
no subject
"Then again... maybe not the best time to head back to town," she realises, remembering the sleep-inducing music that made her bring Cortana back here to begin with. Probably not worth pushing their luck with that whole affair even if it's where the bars and such are.
no subject
"I know there's stuff to drink there, and my roommates are usually out this time of day..."
no subject
Even if she is, officially, very much single right now, bringing a date home if her roommate was there is far too awkward to even contemplate. Things are weird enough at the moment. But then again, that's just extra reasons to look for a distraction!
no subject
"Well then. Allow me to lead the way?"
no subject
"Go for it."
no subject
"Don't mind if I do." She'll gently escort Eda to her apartment which is, as promised, quite empty right now, though the evidence of Tony's tinkering is spread out through the common area, along with Cortana and Jaeger's efforts to keep the couch and kitchen free of clutter and technological experimentation.
no subject
"What's all this about? Yours, or...?" She isn't actually sure if she's met whoever Cortana lives with. Not that she really has the right to comment on anyone's living room, given the giant bird nest taking up her own.
no subject
She tidies a little, making sure that there are no tools or pieces of projects where they shouldn't be. In particular, she goes to check the kitchen...
"Wanna drink? We've got coffee, tea, milk, I'm pretty sure there's whiskey..." Cortana isn't the only person who stocks the kitchen (she leaves a lot of the food decisions to Tony and Jaeger ...mostly Jaeger since he does the cooking), but she is usually the one topping off the 'essentials' and daily use items.
no subject
"I'd have never guessed," Eda says in a deadpan, apparently commenting a little whether she has the right or not; then again, giant bird nest aside Eda tends to keep her stuff fairly organized, even if she has a lot of it.
Instead of following Cortana around too closely, for the moment Eda decides to sprawl on the couch as she watches her head into the kitchen.
"Wouldn't turn down whiskey. Or coffee with a shot of it." Eda has been making excellent decisions today, and will apparently keep doing so.
no subject
She also gets out the whiskey. The bottle is full enough that Cortana won't feel bad pouring someone a shot without asking. (She contributes enough to the groceries that she shouldn't feel bad anyway, especially given she doesn't eat.)
"Am I really so hideous that you don't want to remember me?" She says in a very obviously fake hurt tone. If that were the case Eda wouldn't be here, she knows. "Or are you just wanting to get drunk without feeling like you are?" Whiskey is the one that gets people drunk with only a little, right? It's got a pretty good alcohol content, though she knows that tolerances differ and the experience is at least partially subjective.
no subject
"It'd take a hell of a lot more than coffee and whiskey for either one." If nothing else, that much is true. For better or worse, Eda's alcohol tolerance is such that she tends to start her mornings with a lot more than this, and that's not enough to noticeably impact how she functions, let alone make her forget anything particularly significant.
"Besides, jury's out on whether I'll want to remember this," she adds in a more teasing tone. It really depends on how awkward the whole idea turns out.
no subject
"I'll try to make it worth remembering."
Cw implied alcoholism
"Well, don't be too hard on yourself, I've had a lot more practice," Eda points out with a quiet snort. Her tone makes it unclear if she's being a little self deprecating or if it's just a brag.
"And... I'm guessing it's both when it comes to the booze. Seems like humans don't handle it great, but I've had a lot of practice there too." It may not be a healthy coping mechanism, but it sure is one of her main ones.
no subject
"It really depends on the human, honestly." The coffee is done, so she'll mix up Eda's coffee and whiskey combination before bringing it over to her, flopping casually on the couch beside her.
no subject
"Thanks. Didn't want anything, or is that not something you can do?" It seems like more idle curiosity than anything else; she still doesn't really know all the details of what Cortana is.
no subject
The rules surrounding her current existence are ...weird. Totally arbitrary. It's honestly fascinating.
"At least I don't have to deal with the other parts of digestion." Even if it would be interesting to find out whether people would be able to see the food moving through her.
"So..." she trails off. As bold as she is, she's entirely uncertain of what to do next. Probably let Eda enjoy her drink, but like, is this a good conversation topic, should she put on a movie or play music or something...
no subject
"So..?" she repeats, tilting her head to the side and quirking up an eyebrow. "Eager, are we?" she adds in a more teasing tone. The whole thing might be awkward, but she's going to deal with that via extra false confidence and flirting.
no subject
Looks like they're both defaulting to the same tactics, here.

After a second Eda sets down her coffee and relaxes into a sprawl again before patting her lap. Probably the best arrangement given the height difference—or maybe she just wanted to see what reaction that got. Either or.

Eda's a little surprised, but she does her best to hide it.
She moves a hand to Cortana's back as she leans into the kiss, and the other to rest on the nape of her neck, claws tangling lightly into her hair.
It's not very... personal, but at least he knows what she's doing—and since it's not especially personal she's not a flustered mess, so probably that's just as well.
no subject
As for the outside stuff, well, Cortana's hologram is a little cooler than human body temps, which is probably a little weird, though her "flesh" has much the same give and softness, and her hair feels just like regular hair. She stiffens, then relaxes, settling into Eda's lap. After a moment of barely noticeable indecision, she settles on putting her arms around Eda's neck.

While it's by no means to an AI degree, they share the tendency to overthink. At the moment her thoughts are circling over whether this is going to be awkward later, because it's all well and good to do things like this for fun but people put a lot of stock in firsts...
But she's here now, so overthinking won't help. Instead, she just focuses the fact it's kind of funny how fast Cortana leans into everything, and the fact this is, at least, some fun with someone attractive. The temperature is interesting, but, more than likely, within typical variation where Eda's from.
She shifts her wings a little to make room when Cortana puts her arms around her neck, and pulls back enough to comment after a few more kisses.
"You sure you haven't tried this before...?"
no subject
"Yes... though AI do sometimes inherit pieces of knowledge from the human whose brain was scanned to provide a template for the neural network. I think you can see why this might be a really awkward topic right now." She might have inherited her ability to kiss from her mom, in other words, but she really doesn't want to consider whether that's the case or what it might imply.
Something more interesting and less potentially gross to consider is that she doesn't need to catch her breath at all before talking because she doesn't breathe.
