Who: Yelena and anyone who wants to show up

Summary: Yelena has procured a projector and a copy of Jurassic Park. Everyone's invited.

The invitation that goes out on Monday night is simple:

Jurassic Park showing outside housing Block C this Friday. Movie starts at 8:30pm. Chips, popcorn, soda, blankets provided. Feel free to bring alternate snacks and seating if desired.

Before
The benefit to showing a movie outside, projected against an apartment wall, is that there's only so much set-up required. A few folding tables holding large bowls of chips and popcorn, a couple of coolers for soda and whatever people bring with them, some large blankets spread on the lawn, and everything's just about ready. Yelena - and whoever's volunteered or been drafted to help - has everything ready to go an hour ahead of the movie's start time.

There's plenty of time to chat with old colleagues and new acquaintances.

During
There is still a strip of light at the edge of the horizon when the movie starts, but on the eastern face of the building, it's dark enough for the scene to play out clearly against the large white canvas that has been suspended from the rooftop, weighted so that it doesn't stir in the breeze and disrupt the picture. It is not - quite - the full drive-in experience; there is no stretch of windshield and hood to make the moment when scaled predators jump onto one of the vehicles all the more immersive.

The sound is up loud enough to cover some chatter, but talking too loud still risks getting popcorn thrown at one's head.

After
The movie ends ahead of curfew, enough so that there is a little time for those who've opted to live off campus to chat, or help with clean-up, before saying their goodbyes and slipping out before the gates lock for the night. Or to arrange a place to crash for the night, if they want to linger longer. It's a lovely night, and there probably aren't any actual rogue dinosaurs about.

"They were amazing," Yelena agrees. "If I had to choose a dinosaur to be, I would definitely want to be a raptor."

She flashes Kate a quick grin. "What about you?"

"Yeah. I think you're onto something. I'd want to be clever instead of big."

"Right? And they're fast. And they're social animals, so you could have a lot of raptor friends." She gestures briefly around the small knots of people who are just beginning to disperse.

"You mean after you've fought to be the alpha?" Look. Yelena could drop Kate in a minute, she knows. Why would a raptor!Yelena be any different?

"Only if the original alpha is being dumb," Yelena replies with a laugh. "I don't mind following, I just need to be able to believe the leader knows what they're doing, and isn't planning to screw everyone over."

[bossyboiler]

"Screwing people over didn't seem to be the raptor way." Kate says after a moment. Screwing everyone else over with their intelligence? Yes. Themselves? No.

"No," Yelena agrees. "That's one of the reasons they're the best dinosaur. So I wouldn't mind following a competent raptor leader."

She nudges Kate with her shoulder. "You know, one of the main jobs of the alpha is keeping the rest of the pack fed. So you would probably be leader."

[bossyboiler]

"It's a lot of responsibility but if we all wake up as raptors one day, I'll try to take over with as minimal bloodshed as possible. I promise." Kate nudges Yelena back with her shoulder. Maybe they shouldn't be speaking turning into dinosaurs into existence. It's Gloucester. It wouldn't even make the top five weirdest things.

"I can take care of the bloodshed for you," Yelena assures. "If we turn into raptors and it's necessary."

Or if they remain human and it's necessary, though that's a little much to drop in the middle of what's meant to be a fun, distracting evening.

"I will help you dispose of the bodies accordingly. I mean, if we turn into raptors we don't want to attract carrion species. That's just gross." She says what she means and she means what she says. She's one-hundred percent ride or die for Yelena.
