Hey folks, it's Valentine here. Now that I've had a taste of nitty gritty fieldwork, I think it'd be prudent of me to take a few precautions. I'm looking for a good mechanic. And I'd prefer not to involve ADI at this point, so please don't suggest I just consult with the Technology department. Let's keep this one on one for now.

The parts are proprietary and you won't have seen them before, so I need a quick learner. Advanced experience is a plus, but I've done just fine with regular Joes and Jills up to this point. The absolute most important qualification, though, is that you let me buy you a drink and have a chat with you first. Amateur transhumanism philosophers need not apply, thanks.

I'm willing to either pay or trade what you think is fair. Favors, errands. Maybe I can teach you something.

You know what, let's make that a general offer. Even if you're not a mechanic, I'm happy to teach what skills I can to anybody interested. Want to learn to shoot a gun? Use a computer? Make a theory corkboard? Swing dance? Hit me up and let's make it a date.

Really, I can't stress enough how much extra time I've got on my hands.

Correct. Though you can't blame the folks back home so much. We have the fortune to be living 200 years after the peak of human stupidity blew the whole world to bits.

Culture sort of hit a sandstill, for obvious reasons, so there hasn't been much in the way of new things. Except tech, though that's not particularly good news either.

Huh. That's actually a little surprising. Are people stuck trying to go back to what their ancestors had, instead of moving on and building something new?

Sometimes. Honestly, we're just now getting to the point where people even have the option to think about moving forward. Survival is still the number one priority, but things have gotten easier over time, and that's when folks can start trying to create something new.

Not that "something new" is always a good idea. There's always gonna be idiots to who take it too far.

Sort of leads into my current predicament, actually.

Let me guess, someone didn't think beyond the original "I can do this" to "how will this play out over a few dozen years"?

Yeah, nothing like an underground gang of unchecked mad scientists using the world like a petri dish to really add some spice to the post-nuclear wasteland.

Seems hypocritical to gripe about them when yours truly was once a project of theirs, but you know. It's the principle of the thing.

I think that gives you even more license to gripe about them. You have to live with the direct results of their decisions.

Y'know, you're right. I've got a letter of complaints 40 pages long. Now, if only I had their address.

At the very least they used standard screws when they put me together.

I'm not an engineer. But if you need people who can do the equivalent of emergency first aid if you get in trouble on-mission, I have some mechanical skill and am willing to learn.
