Event - Appalachia: Into the Pines

Appalachia: Into the Pines

Footage plays on the television as a new story comes on, showing a series of sweeping vistas, intercut with clips of wolves that have clearly been filmed at some local wildlife sanctuary. "As far as anyone knows it, the last wolf to ever freely roam the Allegheny Mountains was slain in West Virginia in 1897. Daniel Stoffer Hamrick saw to the beast's passing, and the woods in our part of the world have gone quieter ever since. Appalachia does not forget its history, though. It buries it beneath coal and flyash, debts and white powder and pills. And the blood of people taken before their time, by the mines, by the mountain, by things we don't have names for, just hurt. But Appalachia does not forget.

"This is Cindy Parsons with Channel 5, Wolf News." Footage cuts to a newscaster standing outside a gated apartment complex with FYRE's logo emblazoned on it. "As we know, our beloved Wolf Pen is home to one of the biggest FYRE worker housing complexes in Wyoming County. It is a monument to the history of our town, and this week, we'll be on the lookout for visitors from all over the country, coming to see the grand re-opening of the historic Bluestone Mine as a museum."

Footage cuts to a nondescript businessman, identified by the news footage as Carl Watts, CEO of FYRE. He's smiling blandly as he stands at a podium and gestures to the entrance of the mining tunnel behind him. "The Wolf Pen community has been a partner to us for decades now, and we knew it was finally time to give something back to all y’all. We'll have our soft opening on Monday with a full Rumble Down Under party in the old mines scheduled for June 15th. We'll have a live bluegrass concert and anticipate a huge influx of tourists to the area to help out our neighbors itching for a few more pocketbooks to tend to." A wink.

The footage returns to Cindy. "FYRE has stated that this new museum will provide an educational tool and tourist attraction for those wanting to learn about West Virginia, Wolf Pen, and the hard-working men and women who have made this beautiful part of our nation their home. Time will tell. Time is always telling when it comes to the promises of people who have used our land and our bodies to line their pocketbooks. They fill our blood and our lungs with black tar and-"

Cindy cuts out and is replaced by in-studio anchors. "Thank you, Cindy!" a blonde woman says, smile just a little strained. "I think we're all looking forward to seeing the big opening by FYRE on Sunday and that rocking good party next month. It should be a gneiss one! Now to Tim with the weather. Tim?"

"In a garbage pile?" Yelena asks, mustering a level of incredulity that she doesn't quite feel - except for the fact that they've heard nothing about anyone appearing outside of the ADI facility in Gloucester, there's nothing stranger about someone tumbling out of another reality into a dump than into, say, an air vent.

She steels herself, and strides forward, matching Donna's pace. It feels reckless, but no more so than letting the other woman get too far away.

"Your friend isn't here. Something's trying to lure you into a trap."

"I don't..." Okay, so maybe it sounds bonkers when Yelena says it like that. "Maybe, but all of this is mad. And it's just a dump. What could-!"

She cuts off with a shriek as she feels something wrap around her ankle and yank. Donna sinks very suddenly into the heap.

Yelena curses, short and sharp and vicious, and lunges into the trash heap, reaching out to grab at Donna's arms before the trash heap can collapse in and bury her.

"Drop that shit and hold on to me!" she barks, bracing as best she can to prevent both of them from being pulled deeper.

Apologies for the delay! Gonna try to get back on the horse here after some brainrot.

Donna drops most of it the grasp for Yelena, but she keeps hold of the screwdriver. She can't let go of that. Of everything, it's most emblematic of the Doctor, and it's something that can help. It could help so much.

"Bloody hell. Let go! Oi! Let go, you stupid rubbish heap!" Unfortunately, with her hanging onto the screwdriver, trying to keep it above her head as she's pulled down to her armpits, the heap isn't letting go.

Visions of brutal tug-of-war flicker behind Yelena's eyes, and she grits her teeth, eyeing the trash heap with something that teeters on the brink of malicious intent. This isn't like the sinkhole, isn't just gravity and suction - there's clearly something there.

If she can't pull Donna free, then she'll just have to make that something let go.

"Where did it grab you?"

"It's got my ankles and- God, it feels like it's all over me!" Like something in the trash is moving against her, tightening. "I am not dying in a dump! That is not going in my bloody obituary." Donna tries to stab the garbage around her with the screwdriver as desperation sets in. Maybe it will activate? It doesn't, but what it does do is catch in a container and get ripped from her hand.

"No!" With it out of her grasp, Yelena will find there's much less force pulling on Donna now.

"Leave it!"

Yelena tugs hard on Donna's arms, trying to pull her clear enough to get a grip around her chest instead - for better leverage, for more force without as much risk of injuring the other woman if whatever's in the trash redoubles its efforts.

The order snaps her out of it for a moment, and Donna realizes she really needs to focus on getting out of this. They can... come back for the Doctor's things. She will come back for them. she tells herself. She'll just have to be more careful about it. Instead of lunging for the sinking screwdriver, Donna latches onto Yelena, and does her best to help in wriggling free.

It's a tense few seconds before the disgusting heap loosens around her, and she's able to kick her way to freedom. As soon as she is, she tries to let go of Yelena. "Out of the rubbish now, yeah?" God, she feels gross, but she moves as quickly as she can to the edge, bending over slightly to try to keep from being sick after all of that. "You saved me."
