Appalachia: Into the Pines

Footage plays on the television as a new story comes on, showing a series of sweeping vistas, intercut with clips of wolves that have clearly been filmed at some local wildlife sanctuary. "As far as anyone knows it, the last wolf to ever freely roam the Allegheny Mountains was slain in West Virginia in 1897. Daniel Stoffer Hamrick saw to the beast's passing, and the woods in our part of the world have gone quieter ever since. Appalachia does not forget its history, though. It buries it beneath coal and flyash, debts and white powder and pills. And the blood of people taken before their time, by the mines, by the mountain, by things we don't have names for, just hurt. But Appalachia does not forget.

"This is Cindy Parsons with Channel 5, Wolf News." Footage cuts to a newscaster standing outside a gated apartment complex with FYRE's logo emblazoned on it. "As we know, our beloved Wolf Pen is home to one of the biggest FYRE worker housing complexes in Wyoming County. It is a monument to the history of our town, and this week, we'll be on the lookout for visitors from all over the country, coming to see the grand re-opening of the historic Bluestone Mine as a museum."

Footage cuts to a nondescript businessman, identified by the news footage as Carl Watts, CEO of FYRE. He's smiling blandly as he stands at a podium and gestures to the entrance of the mining tunnel behind him. "The Wolf Pen community has been a partner to us for decades now, and we knew it was finally time to give something back to all y’all. We'll have our soft opening on Monday with a full Rumble Down Under party in the old mines scheduled for June 15th. We'll have a live bluegrass concert and anticipate a huge influx of tourists to the area to help out our neighbors itching for a few more pocketbooks to tend to." A wink.

The footage returns to Cindy. "FYRE has stated that this new museum will provide an educational tool and tourist attraction for those wanting to learn about West Virginia, Wolf Pen, and the hard-working men and women who have made this beautiful part of our nation their home. Time will tell. Time is always telling when it comes to the promises of people who have used our land and our bodies to line their pocketbooks. They fill our blood and our lungs with black tar and-"

Cindy cuts out and is replaced by in-studio anchors. "Thank you, Cindy!" a blonde woman says, smile just a little strained. "I think we're all looking forward to seeing the big opening by FYRE on Sunday and that rocking good party next month. It should be a gneiss one! Now to Tim with the weather. Tim?"

Malcolm tucks his head back against Neal's shoulder and breathes relief into it.

"I'm glad. I'm glad I'll... be able to find you if anything happens like the snowstorm again." He tilts his head to glance up. "I was out of my mind. I know we talked on the phone but. It's not the same."

[conning]

"I know." Neal kisses Malcolm's temple. "Me too."

He holds on a little tighter. "I'll be glad knowing when you come home."

"How late can you stay?" Malcolm asks softly. His bed is certainly not big enough for someone to sleep in it with him, if he falls asleep. "Can you at least stay until my roommate gets back?"

[conning]

The idea of leaving makes Neal feel sick. He’s not ready to be alone, not after last night, and “alone” would be the better scenario than Yelena if he can’t be with Malcolm. He wants to tell Malcolm that, wants to ask if they can find a way to make sharing work tonight.

“I can do that,” is what he says.

[abrightboy]

"You're sad," Malcolm notes. It's not a question. "...It's not about the animals anymore, is it?" he asks carefully.

If he were normal, Neal could stay in his bed. If he were normal, they could stay there quietly without bothering anyone.

[conning]

“I’m okay,” he says softly. He’s starting to wish for another drink. He shifts enough to kiss Malcolm’s temple again. “Just… tired. Tired and…”

He’s not sure what word begins to map even a quarter of his current emotional landscape. “Not looking forward to what I’ll dream about tonight.”

The attempt at irony falls flat.

That is something Malcolm understands. His hand, fidgeting at Neal's shirt button, grips his shirt.

"Stay," he says softly. "I'll stay awake."

[conning]

“You don’t have to do that,” Neal protests. “You don’t get enough sleep as it is.”

[abrightboy]

"I don't sleep that much; that makes it easier to stay awake," Malcolm argues.

[conning]

“If you’re able to sleep, you should.” He eases back a little so he can look Malcolm in the eyes. “Please. We all need to be at our best here. I’ll sleep on the floor, get my blankets and a pillow, I can do that. Don’t tell my biographer, but I’ve slept worse places.”

[abrightboy]

Malcolm watches his face.

"You'll stay? It's not... you can sleep like that?"

[conning]

“I’ll manage. I’d rather be here than have Yelena asking questions.” He clears this throat when his voice cracks a little on the words, like it’s just because he’s thirsty. A pause. “And I’ll feel better knowing where you are.”

[abrightboy]

"Well... if you lose track of me, I'll... be the one screaming," Malcolm jokes lamely.

[conning]

Neal presses his forehead against Malcolm’s hair. “I’ll take it. It means you’re alive.”

[abrightboy]

Malcolm swallows thickly.

“Well, remember not to get killed here. You promised to live with me in Gloucester.”

[conning]

"Same to you," Neal says quietly. "We haven't gone to New York together yet."

[abrightboy]

Malcolm smiles, snuggling closer.

"Don't let me go to sleep," he murmurs sleepily.

[conning]

Neal makes a noise of assent, even though he thinks it’s good for Malcolm to get as much sleep as possible.

Regardless, he can’t keep the promise—he’s asleep himself in minutes. Not long after that, he’s whimpering quietly.

[abrightboy]

Malcolm listens to him breathe, uses that sound to focus on, to stay alert. When it changes to the whimpering, he frowns faintly and lifts his head, reaching out to touch his shoulder.

"Neal?"

[conning]

Neal jolts away from Malcolm with a cry, falling off the bed and hitting ground hard enough to get the breath knocked out of him. For a second he’s caught in a panicked struggle to breathe, thinking he’s being attacked, but then his surroundings clarify themselves in his mind and he’s just…

Staring at Malcolm from the floor, tears on his face, trying to remember how to inhale.

Neal’s jolt startles Malcolm initially, but a moment later he scrambles over the edge of the bed to crouch beside Neal.

“Are you okay?”

He reaches out, then hesitates, because he’s not sure that touch is welcome yet.

[conning]

Neal wants the contact. Unthinkingly, he reaches out, taking Malcolm hand and drawing it over so he can press Malcolm’s fingertips against his face. He exhales shakily.

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay.”

[abrightboy]

Malcolm breathes out relief when Neal takes his hand. He scootches forward, almost into Neal's lap.

"What did you dream?"

[conning]

“I don’t know,” he says, honestly enough. He closes his eyes and turns his head a little to press his face more closely against Malcolm’s hand. “Just… flickers. Bits of violence, things I knew wanted to hurt me that I couldn’t see.”

Malcolm nods.

“I know those dreams. Do… do you want some water?” he asks.
