Event - Appalachia: Into the Pines

Appalachia: Into the Pines

Footage plays on the television as a new story comes on, showing a series of sweeping vistas, intercut with clips of wolves that have clearly been filmed at some local wildlife sanctuary. "As far as anyone knows it, the last wolf to ever freely roam the Allegheny Mountains was slain in West Virginia in 1897. Daniel Stoffer Hamrick saw to the beast's passing, and the woods in our part of the world have gone quieter ever since. Appalachia does not forget its history, though. It buries it beneath coal and flyash, debts and white powder and pills. And the blood of people taken before their time, by the mines, by the mountain, by things we don't have names for, just hurt. But Appalachia does not forget.

"This is Cindy Parsons with Channel 5, Wolf News." Footage cuts to a newscaster standing outside a gated apartment complex with FYRE's logo emblazoned on it. "As we know, our beloved Wolf Pen is home to one of the biggest FYRE worker housing complexes in Wyoming County. It is a monument to the history of our town, and this week, we'll be on the lookout for visitors from all over the country, coming to see the grand re-opening of the historic Bluestone Mine as a museum."

Footage cuts to a nondescript businessman, identified by the news footage as Carl Watts, CEO of FYRE. He's smiling blandly as he stands at a podium and gestures to the entrance of the mining tunnel behind him. "The Wolf Pen community has been a partner to us for decades now, and we knew it was finally time to give something back to all y’all. We'll have our soft opening on Monday with a full Rumble Down Under party in the old mines scheduled for June 15th. We'll have a live bluegrass concert and anticipate a huge influx of tourists to the area to help out our neighbors itching for a few more pocketbooks to tend to." A wink.

The footage returns to Cindy. "FYRE has stated that this new museum will provide an educational tool and tourist attraction for those wanting to learn about West Virginia, Wolf Pen, and the hard-working men and women who have made this beautiful part of our nation their home. Time will tell. Time is always telling when it comes to the promises of people who have used our land and our bodies to line their pocketbooks. They fill our blood and our lungs with black tar and-"

Cindy cuts out and is replaced by in-studio anchors. "Thank you, Cindy!" a blonde woman says, smile just a little strained. "I think we're all looking forward to seeing the big opening by FYRE on Sunday and that rocking good party next month. It should be a gneiss one! Now to Tim with the weather. Tim?"

[Cindy Parsons and 'they' are now worth abandoning all the show of the runaway pig. Tim does look mildly scolded-- don't mind him.]

The same thing I was looking for back home, I guess. [It's always a lie. If only he knew what he was looking for, what to chase, what to stalk and wear down. He follows the man.]

It's all around the internet. More about belief than education, but that's what I'd like to find a way to flip. [How long before Warden Nia calls out his stupidity again, Tim wonders. Just how stupid is this line of thinking?

(He asks, as if he can't feel the goosebumps of the scratchy legs of roaches running down his arms as they run to the meat of dead people.)]

Have you heard of monsters, Sheriff? Black magic? Does Wolf Pen attract those types?

[The sheriff stops short--as in, he literally stops in his tracks and gives Tim that scrutinizing look all over again.]

Some folks'd say it takes a strange one to go around asking that kind of question. And some folks might wonder if you're asking because you want to go back to Essex and write up a story about those ignorant folk down in Wolf Pen and what backwards things they believe. We're not the fools you might be thinking we are.

[Despite his words he looks...hopeful, almost.]

cw death mentions, more bug mentions

I don't know what news reached you, Sheriff Porter--

[Imagine the sight: presumed college-type yuppie on the heels of portly-type small town fuzz.]

But there was a group of people who died inside an Essex warehouse, their bodies eaten by an unnatural number of aggressive-- animals. [It's like his tongue is heavy, glued to the bottom of his mouth. Makes talking difficult. Tim thinks he needs therapy.] Insects. The people were gathered there by a social media sensation, back 'from the dead'. There was magic at play. And a terrible use for it. I'm telling you this because the same thing will happen here. People will gather, people will die. Parsons was excited for it, wasn't she? The idea of retribution.

Some folk want to stop that. Without causing-- undue harm.

I--

I hadn't heard about that.

[He looks a little ill at the description.]

You think Parsons is going to launch some kind of attack on FYRE? With magic?

[He seems to have a lot to mull over and stands rubbing his chin and mouth, staring into the middle distance. Abruptly, he gives up on any veil of incredulity.]

There's been dark magic in the hills and hollers since long before Cindy's time and mine. What makes you think something big's going to happen here now?

[ADI is going to hate him for this. Tim can't even know if he's going to end up hating himself. He stops when Porter does, at ease with this fresh dynamic of theirs.] It's why I asked if you had kids. The magic's always been here.

[If not a part of the people in this world, it's certainly... a part of the world itself. It's undeniable.] The awareness of it is what's growing. And the... fear of it, is what makes those... Entities feed. Get more powerful. Become more common. Take more control. There might be a ritual in the works. This is prime ground for the Buried.

[And.]

If we can get better access to information...

I haven't even introduced myself. James. Griffin.

[And welcome to Jackass.] I study these things. Let me help you.

[Ron listens attentively, but from his somewhat confused expression it's probably obvious Tim has lost him a bit already.]

I...well, I appreciate that, James, but...no one's ever paid any mind to Wolf Pen, or the...things...

What do you mean, a ritual? And what's the Buried?

I'm probably not the best person to answer all of your questions. Truth be told, I never expected you to care.

[Is that a slight or just a thoughtless little confession? Tim frowns.

Quit while he's ahead? Make good on his promise to break into the church? Milk the Sheriff for all he's worth? (Note to self: don't ever use that phrase that way, ever. again.)]

The Howling Wolf Inn would welcome you. If you stop by, if you want to be a part of this. They've been following FYRE, I think. They'll know better.

Hell, I care more'n most about what goes on in this town.

[Does he sound a little hurt? Yes, yes he does.]

That's where that whole convoy from out of town is shacked up, isn't it? I knew they weren't tourists. But how do I know you're not bullshitting me again?
