Event - Appalachia: Into the Pines
Footage plays on the television as a new story comes on, showing a series of sweeping vistas, intercut with clips of wolves that have clearly been filmed at some local wildlife sanctuary. "As far as anyone knows it, the last wolf to ever freely roam the Allegheny Mountains was slain in West Virginia in 1897. Daniel Stoffer Hamrick saw to the beast's passing, and the woods in our part of the world have gone quieter ever since. Appalachia does not forget its history, though. It buries it beneath coal and flyash, debts and white powder and pills. And the blood of people taken before their time, by the mines, by the mountain, by things we don't have names for, just hurt. But Appalachia does not forget.
"This is Cindy Parsons with Channel 5, Wolf News." Footage cuts to a newscaster standing outside a gated apartment complex with FYRE's logo emblazoned on it. "As we know, our beloved Wolf Pen is home to one of the biggest FYRE worker housing complexes in Wyoming County. It is a monument to the history of our town, and this week, we'll be on the lookout for visitors from all over the country, coming to see the grand re-opening of the historic Bluestone Mine as a museum."
Footage cuts to a nondescript businessman, identified by the news footage as Carl Watts, CEO of FYRE. He's smiling blandly as he stands at a podium and gestures to the entrance of the mining tunnel behind him. "The Wolf Pen community has been a partner to us for decades now, and we knew it was finally time to give something back to all y’all. We'll have our soft opening on Monday with a full Rumble Down Under party in the old mines scheduled for June 15th. We'll have a live bluegrass concert and anticipate a huge influx of tourists to the area to help out our neighbors itching for a few more pocketbooks to tend to." A wink.
The footage returns to Cindy. "FYRE has stated that this new museum will provide an educational tool and tourist attraction for those wanting to learn about West Virginia, Wolf Pen, and the hard-working men and women who have made this beautiful part of our nation their home. Time will tell. Time is always telling when it comes to the promises of people who have used our land and our bodies to line their pocketbooks. They fill our blood and our lungs with black tar and-"
Cindy cuts out and is replaced by in-studio anchors. "Thank you, Cindy!" a blonde woman says, smile just a little strained. "I think we're all looking forward to seeing the big opening by FYRE on Sunday and that rocking good party next month. It should be a gneiss one! Now to Tim with the weather. Tim?"

[Rae chuckles to herself, but shifts in her seat to face him, giving him her full attention. She glances over his shoulder at the glaive, brow furrowing slightly, before returning eye contact...or trying to before she realizes that's not going to happen.]
You mean the Bluestone? Answer'd be the same if you meant the Keppler, though. FYRE's owned by Carl Watts and these two mines with it, along with the Cumnock out in North Carolina and a couple others. What is it you want to know?
no subject
He is the man behind the event coming up in the Bluestone mine, yes? Does he have any children or any family that we know of at all? This may seem irrelevant, but I ask you bear with me.
no subject
[The question makes her pause thoughtfully.]
That is...a good question. I don't know where you're going with it, but good question. Hang on, let me just--
[By now Garner is probably familiar with the sounds of clicking and typing that occur when someone is running a search through entirely too many files on a beat-up little laptop.]
Okay, here we are. There was a wife and son, but they're not in the picture anymore. Looks like they got divorced about twenty years ago and the wife kept the kid.
no subject
Hmm...alright. And...do we know if he has any connection to a person or thing called Pyre? Pyre and Fyre might seem a little too obvious, but it was implied to me Pyre might be a person of some concern.
no subject
[More clicking and tapping.]
Not seeing anything, but Pyre's pretty new on the scene and most of our intel on him is from you folks up in Gloucester. You come across something to make you think he's tied up in this, too?
no subject
Now he pauses, his hands falling back to his sides. These people weren't so different from the Claret Order, they held the information and the resources and the support. He needed to trust them just the same, even if giving up the information made the whispers in his mind stir.]
Intel from a self-interested, yet knowledgeable source. 'Pyre's daddy is planning something' something that involves Dunn. I don't know Pyre, but FYRE seemed close enough, the man -Watts- is planning something...something to do with a mine which, if I remember correctly, is often dark.
no subject
If you're right, that's potentially another avatar in play here. Can I ask who this self-interested source was?
no subject
Her question makes him pause, but he's here already.]
Fenix Down. He told me during a chat I had with him.
no subject
[This is the voice of someone who wasn't sad to hear of Fenix Down's passing.]
I suppose he would have known Pyre's family business if anyone did. And Pyre wasn't present when ADI hit the circus, either...meaning he's still around somewhere.
no subject
[Nothing to worry about, then.]
If I wanted to dig deeper, try to find a connection, is there somewhere you might recommend I check first?
no subject
Public record search if you're any good with computers, try to track down the kid and confirm whether his movements correspond with what we know about Pyre's history. Could be someone with FYRE who knows about Watts' kid, too, though the people who actually work the mines probably aren't privy to too much of that kind of gossip. Unfortunately if you're right, Down was probably the best link between the two of them.
Or hell, you could just start asking around town whether anyone that meets with Pyre's description has shown up lately, pretend he's your missing cousin or boyfriend or whatever. If you start poking around, though, be ready for him to hear about it and come poking back at you.
no subject
It would help if I knew Pyre's description. I'm afraid, even if I passed him, I would not know him, he would likely be out of sight.
[It's not a good time for a blind joke...but it was there and so were they, so-]
Regardless, I'll find some help and check into it.
no subject
I can pull up a picture and describe it to you, give you as much as a blind family member might have. But yeah, unless you're going to lean on what you can get by word of mouth, you might want a partner.
no subject
He nods.]
I intend to find a couple. Your idea of going online is a good one. [He just needed to find someone more tech savvy than himself. Crowley came to mind.]
I would like that description, I'll decide my 'story' later.
[After all -last he'd seen himself, at least- he had darker skin and hair, if Pyre was his apparent opposite, a family member might seem too farfetched.]
no subject
[Rae pulls an image up on her computer, muttering about needing to add a print to the dossier for this case, before providing a description. Pyre is, according to Rae, a baby-faced but lean white man, likely in his twenties or early thirties.]
I can shoot out a copy of this picture to anyone you're working with, too.
no subject
I read that you can send messages on a delay? Will you send one to George Milton, but delay it to midmorning tomorrow? I want a chance for him to say no. Same thing for Crowley.
[Unless Crowley simply wanted no part in helping, he didn't expect the man to say no. If he did, he could delete the picture on his own or pass it along.]
Thank you for your help, Miss Rae.
no subject
Let me know if you need anything else. I'll be here.
