Ainsley scoffed when she got her housing assignment. Did they know that she knew Gil, or was it just a coincidence? She isn't sure she believes in them much, to be honest, so she's assuming it was the first. The key to Malcolm's apartment is still in her pocket and she's going to just... quietly keep it and not say a word, she thinks. It's no one else's business unless she thinks she should make it their business, and it's probably for the best that she has one. Just in case.

She makes her way to Apartment Block C and plucks the key to her own, shared apartment, that someone at the ADI had given her, walking inside with a cautious, "Hello? Gil, are you here?"

Maybe you catch her right at the start.

Maybe you catch her later when she's taking stock of the apartment. Checking the fridge for halfway decent ingredients, the bathroom for much-needed beauty-and-other-lady-supplies and making notes of the things she'll need to pick up before she commits to living here, with two men, no less.

There was a time when all this would have annoyed him.

Not just the uncertainty of this place, the craziness of what was happening here but roommates? A year ago he probably would have argued, would have asked for single rooms or maybe looked for a place to stay by himself. But his last months were spent sharing a barack with numerous cots and working in a place where personal space was very much non-existent. So right now this apartment? This is very quiet. And spacious.

He walks the rooms slowly, taking in the furniture and the luxury of amenities he didn't have in the field. Okay, that's nice. He wonders, will there be some cold drinks in the fridge? Cooling things had been a bitch out where he was stationed and the idea of ice cubes quickly draws him to the kitchen where he finds Ainsley.

Oh. Looks like introductions are in order.

Carter stops in the doorway and clears his throat.

"Hi."

Ainsley is inspecting the pantry when comes in and she turns at the new voice coming from behind her, a bag of chips in her hand. "Oh... hi." She smiles, all sunshine bright, her entire face, and her eyes, lighting up with it.

"I'm new," she says, like that isn't obvious considering she's suddenly encroaching on his territory and all. Still, she sets the chips on the counter and crosses the room to introduce herself. "I'm Ainsley."

"John. Nice to meet you."

Carter offers his hand, returning the smile.

"I actually just got here myself. Can see you already found the good stuff..."

He nods at the bag of chips and then at the fridge.

"Think they stocked that for us? I mean, we are saving the world, right?"

"Likewise," and her tone is effortlessly genuine. She laughs softly at that comment. "Well, it's something," she admits with a shrug. She's used to... a certain caliber of things, but it's not so bad as far as amenities go, so far.

"Maybe. Only one way to find out," she said and smirks a little.

And because he really hopes there's some cold drinks in there, he steps over to the fridge and opens it up.

Oh yeah. That's a sight to behold after the last few months.

"Nothing like a housewarming party with a good old fridge raid, what do you say?"

"Totally," she laughs a little and grabs a can of soda, offering it to him before grabbing another for herself. Snacks and drinks in hand, she lead the way back to the living room.

This apartment is... not terrible. But it's below the grade of things she's used to. Still, living space is living space, right? She settles on the couch and turns toward her new companion. "So, do you believe that stuff they told us in that Orientation?" she asks curiously. Conversationally. What else were they supposed to talk about right now, honestly?

He catches her later, while she's in the bathroom, when he comes back with some groceries. He lets himself into the apartment with a quiet sigh of relief as he closes the door behind him.

Except the lights are on. The lights are on, and he feels the distinct presence of another person, and his instinct is to go for her service weapon even though he knows it's probably (another) new roommate.

For a moment his heart twists with anxiety at the question of where the others went, but he locks that down to deal with later. "Hello?"

Sharing an apartment is going to be weird. She’s used to living on her own, where the sound of someone entering the apartment was unnerving when she wasn’t expecting it. That feeling creeps up now as she pulls herself to stand at her full height, which isn’t intimidating at all, but it leaves her in a better position than being crouched in front of the cabinet under the bathroom sink, and that makes her feel better.

Then she hears the voice and every ounce of that anxiety floods out of her in a rush. Her shoulders relax, she wanders out into the main common area of the apartment, hands up in a bit of mock-surrender. “It’s just me,” she says, her tone light, words obviously in jest.

Gil... does not relax. He drops his groceries, which make a distinct crack on the tile, and he scowls down at them for a moment like the noise is entirely their fault before he looks back at Ainsley.

She probably hasn't seen this kind of uncertainty on his face before. "Ainsley?"

She frowns at the way nothing in his stance changes. He's still tense. He drops what's in his hands and seems so... unsure of. Something. She doesn't know what. Of her?

"Yeah... Gil, who else would I be?" She hasn't realized people can look very, very convincingly like other people here. Nor has she witnessed nightmare or dream or hallucination versions of people she knows. She can't even begin to fathom why he seems so doubtful of who she is.
