[That's... infuriating. Mercy is slow to anger, but this is galling in a way only her big brother can be. It makes her run hot at the condescension and want to prove him wrong.]

You know nothing of my life before this place. War, murder, the destruction of my home. I have buried dozens of my friends, prepared their bodies for the earth. Children who have not seen 10 full turnings, ripped apart because they had seen something they ought not to.

You know nothing of my life and if you cannot find hope and goodness in yours after whatever terrible things you have seen, then you may wish to take stock of your frailties. For that is one of them.

then you should be well aware that shit aint fair and that people take advantage of others all the time. if people think youre a sucker then theyre going to take advantage of it. its in our nature. those who dont? they usually die young or are just incredibly lucky
