As he explains, she is completely focused on the lesson, taking in the information quickly, integrating it right away. Her kind are fast learners, especially when it comes to combat. This, however, she knows will take some practice. It's mechanical, and so poses a danger if handled recklessly.
"Human kill tribe member with gun."
She looks him in the eye when she says it. That night in Bristol Cove, on land, was the first time she lost to Ryn in combat. She lost her status in the tribe, and Donna lost her life from her wounds.
"I not lose more tribe members. Now, I fight with gun."
When she nods, it's an acknowledgement of what he is teaching her, and in a way, a show of gratitude. Eventually, Katrina will learn to actually say "thank you" - but she's not there yet.
From the way she's paying attention and the sharpness of her eyes, he can tell she's a smart one, that she's picking up everything he says. When she says a human had killed a member of her tribe with a gun, he glances up.
"Humans have come after my pack with guns too. More times than I'd like. Thankfully, we had guns too, so no one got killed."
It's to the point, and also a confirmation of what she's saying - if her tribe is armed, maybe there won't be so many chances for people to kill them. They can fight back, on equal terms. A fair fight.
"Do you remember all the parts? Why don't you say them back to me so we know we're on the same page?"
At that, he hands the gun over to her. There's not much she can do with it right now, besides hit him, since it's not loaded.
This right now is the closest she has felt to kinship with anyone here. It's enough that she relaxes slightly. Very slightly. Enough that she's focused on the task at hand, dimming her awareness of every other thing going on around them.
Nodding, she takes the gun and perfectly re-does what he did, step by step, naming all the parts and what they do. When she is done, she holds it out to him.
"I learn fast."
And there's a hint of a twinkle in her eye. Pride, for sure, but tinged with the kind of wordless communication that happens when there's something like familiarity in the air.

"You good teacher."
