i. Let's Find a Bar, So Dark We Forget Who We Are
[ It's very funny, to Shuten-Douji, that she's been quite tolerant with the people around her. The crisis that looms over everyone doesn't weigh as heavily on the oni as it should. Though if worse comes to worst, she'll figure out how to proceed from there.
It should be great fun either way.
But for now, the past few weeks have been nothing more than downtime and a period where she takes a backseat to see how things unfold. However, she of all people, can't possibly do that without a good drink or two. Or rather, more.
In the early evenings to the very late hours past midnight, the small young-looking woman of Japanese origin can be found in a bar or a dive trying out the Western nibbles and foods and drinking more than her weight in alcohol, so much so that intrigued locals have started to attempt a drinking contest with Shuten. She's taken on the challenge gladly. So if you happen to be enjoying the nightlife of Gloucester, one can happen upon an amusing scene of a contest in progress, or the terribly messy aftermath of one with patrons either passed out or on the brink of starting a drunken fight with the smug Shuten-Douji. Join her, make a bet, it's all well and good as long as it's enjoyable for herand if you pay for her drinks. ]
ii. In the Dark, Our Truths are Revealed
[ At the Flophouse, Shuten is taking up space in the communal space, lounging all over the sofa, just seeing who is coming in or going out. Here, her true visage, horns, and sharp teeth are on display and it appears this is where she's fairly relaxed despite finding ways to enjoy the outside.
So if you're a resident of the Flophouse or visiting a friend, there's an oni who's either napping peacefully or fully awake, nursing some sake (sorry, the room smells like booze), and waving to you cheekily, her voice ever so slightly slurred. ]
Welcome hooome. ♥
iii. CW: Animal cruelty, death | Our Bodies Bound by This Land
[ There's nothing out of place about a dead seagull on the the Docks. Not even two dead seagulls. More than that starts to become a concern and a concern it is because the appearances of the dead birds start to ever so subtly increase over the next two weeks and then pauses.
One is found floating in the water around the docks. Another, its head smashed against the side of a boat. A few days later, a seagull can be found pathetically flopping about, its leg and one wing are broken. It seems to have escaped a rather nasty fate (or someone had let it escape).
Another bird has simply been ripped open with some effort, blood and guts spilling all over, its corpse left to rot on the northeast side of the harbor. This can be blamed on the local gangs that are present around this area and yet this is uncharacteristic of them on the whole. Surely it is just some sick hoodlum trying to get a rise out of everyone?
Anyway, if you happen to be at the Docks during the daytime, Shuten's found a nice space for herself, dangling her legs on the edge and staring up at the sky. There's still a lot of seagulls to watch after all. ]

and so there he is, attempting to peer over the din to see what all the bustle is about. is someone fighting, or having the time of their lives over there?? Shuten is too small to make out over the heads and shoulders of some of the men around her,
does she spot him first, or does he have to muster the BRAVERY to get closer...... ]
no subject
Spotting the tall priest, she immediately makes herself known as her sweet voice calls to him over the din of the crowd. ]
Faaaatheeeerrr. Over here!
[ Some people turn to look at him and then give Abel some room to meet with her. ]
We're juuust getting started over here. You look like you need to be filled to the brim. That's just me though.
no subject
...and simultaneously sends a shudder right through the entirety of his spine that rattles all the way into his boots. his wallet. his wallet, abruptly feels endangered.
coughing into his hand lightly, he's none-the-less shimmying through the crowd in some effort to make it over before the kind souls part like the red sea for him; goodness, does she have a fan club over here or what?? slightly flustered, he's eying over the assembly before plunking down to take a seat where offered, ]
--You certainly have made a name for yourself, haven't you, Miss Shuten? How have you been? So good to see you in high spirits~!
[ was that a pun about 'spirits' and drinking,
do not acknowledge, ]
I-I'm not much of a drinker, please-- [ he's waving an emphatic 'no no' as someone already begins pouring them a new round of shots. oh, dear Lord. ]
no subject
[ Shuten, for all her openness and shamelessness, doesn't show all her cards immediately. The man who just lost a contest to Shuten is dragged off by his buddies while everyone else helps themselves to the shots. Someone slides two towards the, one for her, one for Father Abel.
She takes one shot and raises it to the priest; her cheeks are pink and flushed, and her mood more than merry. ]
I don't have a problem if we both take it slow for now. After all, I just finished a hefty round myself!
no subject
but his protests are cut short as someone VERY drunk to his left slings an arm around his shoulders as if they're best buddies (they are not, for the record)-- pointing to Shuten and mumbling something about how this 'chick' is a riot.
...ah. lovely. she has literally drunk men under the table. one more is about to be added to that number, he surmises, as he lightly displaces that arm with an awkward chuckle. h... haha... oh, god.
he finds himself looking at the contents of the shot glass like he's wondering if it contains snake venom, ]
Do I even want to ask how many of these you've put down...?
[ does he mean shots, or men?
maybe both. ]
no subject
I'm sure someone has it written down somewhere.
[ Shuten doesn't chug down her shot glass yet. In a way she's pacing herself although if it weren't for her cheeks, one wouldn't be able to tell she has had more than humanly possible. Instead, the oni is leaning on the counter swirling her little glass around. ]
Now, how much can you handle I wonder? Should we both agree on who's taking who home?
no subject
[ he's swirling this shot glass before he just
sets it back down on the countertop and regards her, instead. ]
...But I would be more than happy to take you back home and make sure you lay your pretty little head in bed properly instead of, say... finding yourself waking up on the beach with seaweed in your hair come morning, hm? No need to thank me, I'm more than happy to serve as a hand in need~!
no subject
So what you're saying is that you'll be taking responsibility?
[ If it had been anyone else, but her, it probably wouldn't sound so... Suggestive. But it's her. Her voice seems to twist and bend words to make them sound like a vague promise of something. ]
I'm in such good hands. I'll be in your care then alright?
no subject
Oh, absolutely~! You haven't a worry in the world, Miss Shuten! --Ah, say, that reminds me... where are you staying, by the way? If I'm to deliver you home once you've... um, had your proverbial fill, I really ought to know where I'm going, right?
[ is she staying at ADI? ...no, that seems silly as soon as he thinks it. the Flophouse, then?
it is going to be a miracle if they end up in the right place at the end of the night. without a doubt. ]
no subject
What about you?
[ She finally takes her shot, hardly wincing from the strong and stinging aroma. It tickles if nothing else. ]
Though you are a priest... Hm. I can't tell if you follow rules or not.
no subject
Abel's nudging at his glasses and sending a sidelong glance to someone barely managing to keep their feet as they stumble toward the exit. another victim of Shuten's monstrous (pun intended) alcohol tolerance, it seems...? ]
Ah, well. The rules and I have something of a... tentative and strained relationship, I'm afraid! Even so, I am staying at the ADI housing for now!
[ 'for now,' ]
...What have you been drinking, by the way? Do I even want to know? Battery acid, from the smell of it--
slam dunks this tag
[ Shuten gives a low chuckle at Abel's response. She's intrigued by his answer; a strained relationship with rules? One wouldn't think it with that appearance, but she's long past making solid base assumptions about most people.
She claps her hands together merrily when he asks her about the types of drinks she's had so far. ]
The drinks are rather quaint! Nothing beats sake, but these 'shots' as they call it have had rather fun names! Let's see if I remember the names... The Fireball, Lemon Drop, Mind Eraser, Blowjob, Red Snapper, all the tequila related onesβ
[ why yes, she has said all of this with a straight face including... ]
... And so many of them have 'Nipple' in the name. Now, why is that I wonder? But in any case, I've been working hard if you couldn't tell.
slam dunks YOU into my arms
frightening.
he's tilting his head ever so slightly..... ]
Fascinating... do you have some kind of second stomach just for alcohol?! I mean-- I can't fathom where it all goes, you know? H-how are you even upright right now...?
[ Shuten....... he prays none of the other, ah. less 'oni'-inclined among the bar's patrons didn't try to match her, because it sounds like a great way to ensure a one-way ticket to alcohol poisoning and a rather large hospital bill. .......or liver failure?? ]
no subject
[ Another shot is slid her way and Shuten holds it up to the priest, playfully swaying its contents in his face before she leans back and downs that shot. Maybe she is drunk, she did almost say "oni" in front of everyone though it's questionable if most people in this location would immediately pick up on the term.
Still, she practices discretion when needed. ]
We love to drink, fight, steal, and eat what we love. I believe I'm what you would call, a hedonist.
no subject
or just one in particularthat would get on a little too well with her particular mindset; his mind wanders just a moment to the absolute train wreck that would be--before he's snapped back into the moment, clearing his throat once more and fidgeting with the sleeve of his coat that doesn't need fixing. Shuten definitely looks... flush in the face, eyes dancing with the glimmer of amusement AND drink both; 'oni,' was it. oni.
... ]
You enjoy your life, Miss Shuten... is that right?
[ ... ]
Maybe this is a bit of a heavy question to start the night out with, but-- just out of curiosity. Are you happy? --Not necessarily here in Gloucester at this particular moment, I mean, but. In general? With the life you live at home?
no subject
[ His question does give her pause. It appears the answer she's trying to formulate is perhaps a bit more complicated. ]
... It's too early to leave the bar here, but... I don't think this talk is suited for this rowdy and dingy place. Oh, don't worry it's nothing totally serious, but we should probably go take a walk.
no subject
A little walk to clear one's head before continuing on with the night's antics sound... um, good! A good idea as any. Shall we, Miss Shuten?
no subject
(also who's paying? The poor saps who lost to her in tonight's drinking contest...)
When they're outside, Shuten lets go of Father Abel's hand and stretches out her own in front of her, fingers entwined. ]
Ah... With this sort of chill that means winter is upon us, isn't it?
no subject
it looks like she's surprisingly steady on her feet, so he doesn't give any protest when she releases him on her own accord, watching her stretch in the chilly evening air with a smile. ]
It is indeed...! I quite like winter, Miss Shuten-- any excuse to get bundled up and cozy with some tea... maybe a nice fire in the hearth? Ah, romantic, isn't it~? What about you, do you favor wintertime...?
no subject
[ Of course. ]
Though in addition to that, cozying up with another warm body is quite appealing. The way you speak of such frivolities though, you strike me as rather indulgent for a priest, Father Abel.
no subject
[ considering Shuten is a self-professed hedonist, perhaps this enjoyment isn't a stretch for her, either. ]
That isn't so strange, is it? And it's hardly my fault if there's more to enjoy this time of year than most, right? Who doesn't like a nice cup of eggnog, you know?
no subject
[ Shuten is silent for a few more seconds before glancing around to see if there's anyone who may be listening in on them. They're in the clear for now. ]
I enjoy myself wherever or whenever.
[ And very casually she adds on: ]
I've already died before. More than once at this point I'm sure.
no subject
...that is-- not precisely the sort of answer he had been expecting; Abel blinks in an almost quizzical state of shock, mouth working a few times before he can make his throat produce something akin to words, ]
You've-- died...?
[ the casual nature in which she's stated such a thing is both unnerving and more than vaguely worrying. SHUTEN???? ]
no subject
[ The reign of terror brought about by the oni of Mount Ooe was so strong that even if humans did not believe in their existence anymore, it's not a stretch to look up her name online or in a local library that may have some sort of resource about fairytales around the world. ]
I made quite a name for myself back then you know! You don't get away with being a man-eater without it leaving some kind of impression.
no subject
...m-maybe he will be inclined, now.
but what worries him fare more than her renown or fame is the whole dead part-- not because of anything tied to her legend, either. ]
I don't-- I'm afraid I don't quite understand, Miss Shuten... Is it-- is it possible for you to return from death? Maybe because of being an oni?
