(log) It's Thanksgiving Time!
Who: Ren and You
When: Thanksgiving Day
Where: ADI's cafeteria
Summary: A little thanksgiving party for everyone.
Warnings: Alcohol, but other than that, none!
(It's finally the day! Ren's spent the day in the canteen, from the early hours of the morning with the help of Kate, until just close enough to the arranged time.
Several tables in the cafeteria are taken by the food, but there's still plenty of room to sit and spend time with your fellow ADI employees. After the previous month everyone has had, it feels much needed. Available is the following menu:
Deep-fried Turkey + Stuffing;
Ranch-Seasoned Roast Turkey + Stuffing;
Mashed Potatoes + Gravy;
Green Bean Casserole;
Cranberry Sauce;
Pasta alla Norma;
Sicilian Rice Balls;
S'mores Cupcakes
Pumpkin Pie;
Apple Pie;
Sweet Baked Potato;
Pecan Pie;
Roasted Vegetables;
Stuffed Mushrooms;
Squash Soup;
Garlicky Green Beans with Crispy Onions;
A selection of alcohol;
Ren's tried his best to recreate what the Internet and other folks have told him, and without him tasting the original flavors, some of the dishes might have an unexpected twist of spice. Kate has also helped with putting things together, and at the previously arranged time, Ren opens the doors with a smile from ear-to-ear.
Once everyone's settled, he'll ask for a moment to, gasp, speak:)
I'd like to thank everyone for coming today. I know it's been tough, but I'm still thankful we can spend good moments like these together. I hope you enjoy the food.
(And just like so, he'll bow, and hand plates to those ready to eat. Time to dig in!)

Hey, there, Mr. Martin! They're next for the plate once I get through this lot. It's all so good, ain't it? Our cooks really out done themselves, like a season-turning feast!

Yeah, I, I think that's what this holiday is supposed to be for? Like uhm, end of the harvest sort of thing. It's my first time doing something like this, but it really is a fantastic idea.
[Maybe he'll eat more. Hmmm. It occurs to me though he doesn't actually know what she's getting, and he peeks over at her plate.]
What is that stuff, anyway? It, it must be good.

[She's been... told about the traditions, and she remembers someone coming to town with elaborate flower crowns to hand out once when she'd been very little.]
And this is cranberry sauce. It's sort of tart and sweet, almost like the inside of a cobbler.

[He realizes a moment later she'll likely have no idea what he's talking about, and just decides not to try and elaborate further.]
That sounds nice, though. I guess it goes with all the savory stuff? Never been much to mix, but...
[But also he'll do anything someone nice to him says to do, so of course he's going to try it if Mercy is this enthusiastic.]

[Her knowledge of Thanksgiving consists of 'thanks.']
I reckon praising your good fortune and the kindness of the folk around you for the year's something everyone could stand to do a little more of. If you ain't American, what are you?
[She'll happily offer him the bowl for cranberries, stepping aside as she considers the other man. She doesn't quite understand delineations in this world, yet. They don't seem to be based on religious lines.]

[He takes some cranberry sauce as he talks just to have something to do with his hands. Why does explaining this feel so strange? Somehow, he's convinced he's going to do it wrong, or insult her by explaining things in too dumb of terms.]
But uhm, I'm not originally from this country. I'm from a place called England, or well-- it'll make more sense if I call it Great Britian. So, er, I'm British. It's why I kind of have the, uhm-- the accent? Why I sound different than the other people who are from here.

[Oh, he is no expert in any of this. It also, for him, doesn't feel like much of an understandable segway through conversation.]
Most people I think would say there's just the one, uhm, the big capital-G guy. I've never really been the, uhm, the religious type though. I know people used to worship a lot of them a long time ago.

A lot of good folk I talk to here ain't got a god for themselves. It's... strange. And having just one's even stranger. There are different religions here, right? How can any of them be real if they all got different notions about which gods are real, and which ain't?
no subject
[How does he explain this...]
It's sort of like... most people think there's one god. But there's multiple stories about him, and uhm, certain groups think only certain parts are true. So the different religions are based around which of those stories are considered fact and how they tell us to live our lives. Does that... make any sense?

[Mercy offers a smile up at Martin.]
no subject
[He returns her smile, a little sheepish, but happy to help regardless.]
And you're, you're trying, so-- it's not like you're doing anything bad.
no subject
[She flashes a brighter grin at him.]
'Specially not at a party. Go on and eat up. There's plenty of plates left to fill 'fore we do the washing up!
no subject
Well, I'm certainly not going to say no to that. And, and especially not from you, so-- you too! Before you know, the winter and everything. Enjoy it.
[Because of course he can't end this without having to be a little busybody back at her to make sure she's eating enough, too.]
