He casts around and admittedly, nature is working in their favor here. The trees do look kind of sickly and not particularly well-rooted. He doesn't think it wound take much to knock one over, but -
He makes a split-second decision and yells at the thing, then flings his stick to get its attention squarely on him and takes off running for the nearest tree that looks the least stable. If he can veer out of the way or even climb it fast enough, the creature might hit it head on and knock it over onto itself. Or its jaws might do the trick. At the very least, it's another distraction, and another chance for Mercy to strike.
