As I told the person who suggested it, we are uniquely situated where we are half as like soldiers and half simply civilians in the wrong place at the wrong time. Eventually, those on one half will find themselves on the other. Those people made to be soldiers who aren't are the ones who need the most help and comfort.

I've never been on an active field myself, but I served plenty of both solders and people made to be soldiers in my time.
