If You Hold Me, I'll Be Your Only | Closed

Raine was finally glad to be home from Buffalo.
They'd enjoyed the little vacation with Eda for the most part; the weasel things and unwanted antagonisms from others were not ideal, but getting to spend their time with Eda was nice. The bus rides and all of the exploring they did made Raine feel like they were almost kids again! Though they were full of excitement about the trip, it was late, and Eda had already laid down to sleep.

So, Raine quietly settled into bed themself and said good night to Eda. Their mind wandered back to how they'd fallen into old habits with her again, though. Raine didn't do anything overtly romantic with her, but the shoulder touching, the way they talked to each other, and pretty much everything else had begun to become comfortably familiar.

The thought brought Raine back further, to when they'd stumbled across Eda at the gym the first time. She'd picked them up, hugged them, and kissed their face, all things Eda hadn't done to them in years. They were things Raine wished for more of, but remained quiet about due to the circumstances of their arrival and the stress it had put on them both.

"Eda," Raine finally spoke up.

They only continued when they heard a soft, sleepy sound of acknowledgement from Eda. Though anxiety sent their heart into a frenzy and twisted their lungs they wanted to ask Eda anyways. Raine knew neither of them would speak up about it if they continued this way. Raine felt like they were a child again, having to dance around both of their feelings.

"The way you acted, it was.. When we were working together, I- I've always acted friendly towards you... aside from the brainwashing... because you're- I always considered you my friend. But.. that was different."

They paused, and tightened their grip on the part of their shirt’s hem that they'd balled up into their fist. How silly was it that Raine could hardly address their own feelings without getting flustered and nervous. Whatever happened to the cool, collected head of the Bard Coven Eda had seen back in the BATs hideout?

"Were we...?"

Raine felt the rest of the sentence catch in their throat, and they decided to just leave it at that. They closed their eyes, and covered their face, the screen between them and their back to Eda not enough to account for the surge of anticipation and dread they felt. Not because they dreaded Eda telling them yes, but rather if Eda laughed it off, or changed her mind because they'd pretended to be brainwashed even in Gloucester.

Raine was Certain they knew the answer. It was hard not to pick up on the way Eda felt after everything, even before they'd come to Gloucester. But their shared history wouldn’t just disappear from Raine's memory. It couldn't.

50 Steps/The Game Plays Us For Fools| OPEN!

Having your death play in your head in any capacity was a nauseating experience, but having it in a cemetery set a new precedence. Raine had, against their better judgment, climbed a particularly insistent flight of stairs in the cemetery that had been rather... persistent about showing back up as they explored. It had been peaceful, at first, but there was an eerie sort of silence that seemed to envelop them as they reached the top, and looked around.

Raine had always considered the various ways they could've died back on the Isles- assassination and petrification were their mind’s favorite recurring nightmares since they’d become Head Bard. But whatever thing that gave them the vision of their own death had blown away their imagination by far. It made their nightmares pale in comparison to the desolation that came with Belos actually succeeding during the Day of Unity.

Raine had never seen the green, corpse-like form Belos had became until they managed to rip him out of their body. They didn't know what it was capable of when they fought to prevent him from possessing the Titan’s last beating heart.

Raine didn't necessarily attribute this to why they had failed, but Belos had gleefully mocked them for their failure either way.

To seal their defeat, Raine became trapped in the disgusting fungus-like corruption he created. They were immobile and suspended off the ground, unable to see having lost their glasses somewhere in the struggle. To stay sane they whistled the song Eda had written for them to keep sane as they waited for Eda, or anybody, to come rescue them.

But minutes turned into hours, and hours seemed to turn to days as their body gave out, or rather give in to the corruption as it grew over their body. They had long stopped whistling by the time they died, only hoping that Eda and the others hadn't perished the same way.

A:Raine had decided that they’d seen enough of their own demise. They run back down the steps, too panicked to have regard for those climbing up the stairs. That's not to say they'll run into whomever else is in the area, but seeing Raine running at top speeds down the stairs only to move around you at the last minute isn't out of the question.

B: After running from visions of their own demise, Raine sat themself on a bench. They tried to find somewhere as far away from what they perceived as the beginning of the stairs, though eventually gave up considering the stairs followed them. Raine instead settled for one closest to the outskirts of the graveyard. They're lost in thought, trying to play out a scenario in which they'd managed to fail so horribly at stopping Belos.

Settling Down | OPEN!

A: Raine had decided that, in their spare time, they'd explore Bonnie's. They poked around wherever they could within reason of not getting in trouble- mostly- and stop to talk to familiar people and strangers alike if they're friendly. Sometimes, they'd get a little nosy, and would take the time to investigate people or conversations of interest- they mostly focused on gossip or other things of interest pertaining to the ADI. Raine always made sure to stay out of sight- or, to at least have an exit strategy if things went south.

B: A place of interest for Raine is the memorial room. They'd seen it a few times walking in, but had never stopped in to investigate until that day. They don't recognise any of the names painted onto the soft blue walls, but they still took the time to read all of them, one by one. These names were people that those still around cared about- they were friends, family, lovers and loved ones that were missing or had perished to some untimely fate in a realm not their own. Raine felt deeply for them. It was an all too familiar feeling, and reminded them of the people who had disappeared, or ended up in The Conformatorium back at home- in fact, things became too familiar. Raine was transfixed by a drawing on the wall of the Boiling Isles- one that looked like they'd drawn themself, but had no recollection of ever creating. They didn't know what to make of it, but might bring it up to somebody who walks in if they talk enough.

Eda was curled up in her nest, one wing tucked neatly over a shoulder and her head. She wasn’t actually having much luck getting to sleep. Her mind was too busy, but she was doing her best not to keep Raine awake. They'd had enough to deal with given the recent… weasel adventures.

All the same, she was lost in thought to the point it took her a moment to give a soft, curious hum in response to her name.

She listened to their halting question, silent aside from her feathers rustling a bit as she adjusted her wing, until they got to their point. More or less.

Were we…?

She couldn’t pretend she didn’t know what they meant. After all, she’d given them several kisses on the face the moment she first saw they’d returned. There was a chance she’d have done that regardless of their official relationship status, but it was certainly closer than they’d been the last time this version of Raine had seen her at home.

To be honest, the fact they hadn’t brought it up had made her even less sure if they were ready for her to.

It was funny, kind of. She’d been planning to talk to them about it the next day, over dinner or drinks… something, she was still figuring that part out. She knew she couldn't–shouldn't keep putting it off. Buffalo had been a chance to get comfortable with each other again, but the longer she waited the weirder it would be.

She had, at least, thought about what she was going to say. She'd even talked over what she was going to say with another friend. A script which unraveled in her head the moment she had to answer on the spot.

Part of her did want to ask what they meant to buy time, to dodge the question while she thought about what to say. Part of her wanted to play it off with some kind of teasing… but she doubted any of those options would go over all that well.

“Yeah,” she finally said, simply.

“Yeah, we were.” There was another small pause, while she tried to decide where to start. “Not for very… it’d just been a few days.” Barely enough time to believe it was real.

Hunter hadn't been in the graveyard long - he was ready to leave the moment he entered. It was morbid curiosity that drew him here, and he regretted it immediately. The problem was he couldn't find the exit, though he was certain he hadn't gone so far in that he should be lost. The other problem was the steps that seemed to follow wherever he went. Obviously he was meant to ascend them, but he was determined to put that off for as long as possible.

Which was how he found Raine sitting on a bench. His first thought was to ask if they knew what was up those steps, but as he drew nearer, he reconsidered. They looked troubled.

"Can I sit here?"

Hunter gingerly sat on the other end of the bench, watching them carefully. "I didn't mean to scare you. Are you okay? You looked deep in thought."

The graveyard felt too still and quiet, but he could take solace in not being alone here anymore. He reached up to his shoulder for Flapjack before remembering he'd left his palisman at the apartment. He could see the steps from the corner of his eye but resolutely did not look at them.

Hunter frowned, not really believing that they were "okay", but he wasn't going to push.

He jerked a thumb over his shoulder. "Those? Yeah. I got turned around and have been trying to find my way out of here, but I keep finding those stairs instead."

It was obvious that something in this place wanted him to go up, but...

"It feels like a trap."

Hunter looked back at the stairs again, nodded, and hoped that was a choice he could actually make. Right now, the options seemed to be sitting on this bench, wandering aimlessly looking for an exit, or going up - but of them, he would prefer not seeing terrible things.

He took a moment to think of an answer. He knew exactly when he'd been taken from, but with Raine coming from farther back, the explanation might need context. He settled on starting from a point familiar to them both, even if Raine hadn't lived it yet.

"After the Day of Unity. We - Willow, Luz, Gus, Amity, and I - escaped through Belos' portal and had been stuck in the Human Realm for several months. My last memory is of going through a portal back to the Boiling Isles." He shrugged, spread his hands. "Obviously, I never made it."

Bruce was back. He knew that much. He remembers arriving here the first time, staying around some weeks, trying to adjust to... everything. Then he was gone just as fast. He only really can tell by account of the months on the calender's and the environment changing around him.

Returning to Bonnie's quietly was a priority. Setting up in his room and adjusting to the fact he was back to not knowing where he goes and what he does when he's not exactly conscious of it. The most upsetting tell was possibly the greens. He had spent some time in the refurbishments of Bonnie's setting out plants here and there, tending to them. Now they all looked a bit worse for wear.

Bruce had taken to the kitchen when it seemed it would be most empty and started by moving a potted young Monstera out of the window-sill. "You're getting too big to be there, too.." He'd mumble quietly to it, "At least it looks like someone was trying to help, we'll get you repotted soon."

He didn't acknowledge the presence of a nearby skulking Witch before he let out a quiet sigh and tilted his head in their direction, not looking at them head on. "Do you need the counter? I might be a minute so if you need me to clear out I can."

"I know." Eda's tone was still gentle and... careful. Possibly cautious. She was assuming they meant how they felt about her, which meant they were on the same page about that, which would be a start.

Eda heard the soft rustle of the blankets when Raine turned over, the little creak as they got out of bed, but for the moment she stayed where she was. When they peered around the room divider she looked up at them from under her wing, in a way that probably came off more shy than she wanted to admit she was feeling.

She couldn't help thinking they looked awfully cute wrapped in a blanket, though. She gave them a faint, awkward smile and nodded before actually sitting up and moving to give them enough space to sit in her nest.

"Yeah, come sit," she said, patting the spot next to her lightly.

"I know I should've--maybe brought it up sooner," she admitted, dropping her gaze. "I just... didn't want to drop too much on you at once." She hoped they understood, that it had been the right decision. Not telling them things had been a part of why they'd originally fallen apart, but this felt different. She thought.

"And if you'd waited a day, I had a whole thing planned," she grumbled. She didn't sound actually annoyed as much as just sort of embarrassed, and like she was probably trying to lighten the mood.

Caitlyn shouldn't have gone to the graveyard again. But she's curious, she wants more information on how this particular manifestation of the Entities' malevolence works, and the only way to gather more information is to go up the stairs again.

The first time it was an explosion, this time it's a bullet. There's a flash of metal as the barrel raises towards her and an ear-splitting crack, and then--

She's seen Vi's grave here, courtesy of the Entities. She's dreamed of Vi's death. For months after arriving in this world, she'd close her eyes and see Jinx pull the trigger, but in her nightmares it was always Vi that fell. So when the bullet comes this time, what she feels, strangely enough, is relief. Relief that, finally, it's her, and not Vi.

She's wandered a little ways away and pulled out her notebook, furiously scribbling down everything she remembers of the vision rather than grapple with her feelings about what she saw. That's when she notices someone else ascending, only to come racing down a moment later.

They don't even seem to notice her, so she tries to block their path. "Wait! Wait. You're alright, it's over now."

Bruce looked over proper as they started to speak and kept a polite, soft smile on his face. Trying to at least appear as friendly and unthreatening as he could. Which wasn’t exactly hard more often than not with his gait and stature.

“You don’t have to apologize for anything, you have a right to this space as much as I do.” He reassured gently before looking back to the plant, idly checking over the leaf spots and dead shoots. “I’m somewhat new too, went away for a time so I’m trying to readjust again. My name is Bruce, I’m guessing we haven’t met?”

The question was a bit odd, poised as though he wouldn’t exactly know but in his defense it was a very real possibility.

"No. ...and yes..." Hunter caught a glimpse of his sigil as he leaned forward over his knees. He rubbed a thumb over it.

"Your plan didn't work. By the time we got there, most of you were unconscious." Maybe all of them. His main concern at that moment had been Darius, and how he wasn't moving.

"But the Day of Unity was stopped." His mouth worked as he debated saying more. They deserved to know, though, even if it was uncertain. "I...don't know if it was stopped in time."

He doesn't mind it, normally he wouldn't be quick to give out his own either but it doesn't carry the same weight here. It's nice to be able to make introductions, proper ones.

Bruce nods idly and sighs with a bit of weight on the exhale. "They are. I was here some time ago, technically. When they were fixing up this place. I figured a green touch could be nice." He softly chuckled at it, a subtle joke at his own expense. "I.. went away for a bit, apparently. They aren't in nearly as good condition as I'd hoped but I'm trying to fix them up."

He rubbed the back of his neck as he shook his head, "It's not exactly the easiest task with the state they're in now but I'm hoping most will be salvageable, if not I might have to upgrade to cacti and succulents."

Eda relaxed somewhat, some of the tension leaving her shoulders and wings as Raine said they appreciated her waiting. She trusted them to tell her--for better or worse--if they were upset that she wasn't being open enough with them, so that was one worry put mostly to rest.

She let out a startled laugh at their reaction to the next part, suddenly looking awkward in a more embarrassed way. She hoped her blush wasn't terribly obvious in the dimly lit room. She hadn't really thought through the fact that grumbling about her plans meant admitting she'd made those.

Raine's earnest excitement was incredibly endearing, but unfortunately that only made her feel more put on the spot. She looked away, but didn't object to them holding her hand. In fact she squeezed it lightly, running her thumb gently over the back as she tried to keep herself from getting too flustered.

"It wasn't... it wasn't anything big, Rainstorm. I was just going to--take you to dinner or on a picnic or something. And tell you, and stuff." The and stuff was doing a lot of work. She'd had plans for what she was going to say, beyond telling them about last time, but it was easier to plan than to actually do it.

"But now you know so it would feel silly."

He bites back on the urge to apologize. He has no idea what shape the Isles are in, and Belos is still alive and there, and Hunter isn't and if he thinks about it too long it just makes him angry.

He would also like to stop focusing on the negatives, but he can't seem to get away from them.

"I would very much like to get out of here." His eyes turn to the stairs once more. "Can I ask...what was up there?"

It's kind of odd to have so many people bustling around Bonnie's these days- Beau remembers when it was just her for a while there, having to handle a very odd sort of lonliness. But now she needs to reassert being the cool one in here for the long haul, so she people watches, quietly sees where they're all going, and finally finds one alone in the memorial room.

As she's looking at something drawn there, Beau rests her shoulder against the doorway behind, folding her arms. "See something you like? It's all pretty well done."
