Binx is no great researcher - wouldn't be even if he understood how to use the computers. He is, however, interested in knowing things, and he's always found that the best way to be in the know is to simply listen. Eavesdropping has become long habit, and it's not as though he has better things to do than lounge near those doing researchers. Newer is the chance to ask follow-up questions.
