[He hadn't decided to help with the posters for the money, though that was a nice perk to the task. Really, William wanted to sniff around, to get a sense of the city on the eve of something clearly strange. And, well, if he were to put up posters, he'd at least be able to go with others in case shit hit the fan.
While spreading one over a bare wall on the side of a store, he glances over at his poster-laying companion for the day, asking:]
How many of these do you have left, you think?
II. Something Wicked This Way Comes/Send in the Clowns
[He's not entirely sure what to think about being assigned as a 'mentor'. William had only just arrived, after all, and it felt weird to be told to look after someone else. Especially for -- disobedience? It felt like being a hall monitor in elementary school.
Glancing at his -- mentee? partner? -- he nods at the circus around them and says:]
I don't...really want to touch the food. Would be interested in looking at the sideshow, though. Could be informative.
III. Lost and Found
[William sees someone he knows when he walks out of the fun house. For a second, he's walking out into the relative brightness of the circus, regaining his bearings after the maze, looking out at the crowd milling around --
And then he spots Benny Reitz. Benny, who he had hired once for his ability to draw attention in a crowd. Who had done his job flawlessly, who knew how to weave his way amongst human bodies in a dense setting. Who was very, very dead now, a skinned slab of meat in a morgue drawer back home.
William should be suspicious of that. He knows he should, at least a little bit. And yet he darts off all the same, focused and unmovable, shouldering through the crowd to keep track of the bobbing familiar head in the crowd.]
