The scare works, in a way that John is both used to and not—he’s used to dealing with impossible things, existential horror, aliens and alien things that are creepy and awful, but this here, he isn’t used to. This is the supernatural, and he doesn’t know the rules for it, not really. There’s some lovecraftian things out there that make it so very easy to be their pawns, and he might very well just be one, too.
And if that was true, now she knew and could hold that above his head, if she were so inclined to use it as blackmail against him in regards to ADI.
