Irises, I suppose. I like to get them as buds--they look so closed off and modest, but burst into color as then bloom. I really like the red and orange ones, but they're rarer, harder to find than blue or purple. But those are good, too. Did you know the French fleur-de-lis was inspired by irises?
Sunflowers are nice, too--they're just cheery. A bouquet of sunflowers will bring a smile to my face way faster than roses, but roses are just the most generic, overpriced flowers someone can get you. They're like saying 'I know I need to get you something, but I have no clue what you like.' Red roses are the absolute worst. 'Big showy romantic gesture with no personal touch behind it.'
