There's a noise when it gets whacked in the face. It isn't a scream, or a yelp, or anything that should come from a man or animal. It's the sound of a bow scraping harshly against violin strings, reckless fingers smashing against out-of-tune piano keys, instruments breaking and melodies interrupted.

The creature's knocked down, though it's hard to say if it's only stunned or if it's actually unconscious. It's difficult to tell, given the way its head already hung dead and its glassy eyes (still open) never seemed to look at anything to begin with.
