There aren't a lot of tears left in Jaeger, especially not now with exhaustion weighing so heavy on him. There's an ache when he watches the life leave Meredith's body, but it's growing numb, and not just from the venom starting to creep through his body.
When another spider jumps at him, latching onto his leg, he only barely manages to swat it away, and not before it sinks fang into him through the thinner fabric of his pants. The bite immediately goes numb and tingling, and wearily Jaeger leans on his cane, feeling all the fight go out of him. It's only a step or two to where Meredith's fallen, and he hobbles that extra step before sinking slowly to his knees and reaching out to touch her hair.
Suddenly, there's time for that small gesture, however helpless and useless it is. There's all the time in the world, as the distance between his heartbeats yawns like a chasm, each hollow thud echoing for an eternity before the next chases it down.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he's aware of his body starting to shut down. He's a big man in good health, but the spiders are huge and potent. He sways gently on his knees, before he gives up and lays down next to Meredith on the floor. If there are more attacks, more bites, he's barely aware of them now, and his vision fills with blots and smears of shadow. Everything is very far away, except his hand in Meredith's hair, and somewhere, distantly, so distantly, he realizes he's forgotten how to breathe. One breath missed, then another, and then he's not breathing at all and...
